cheap jagmaster project
I bought this body for $40, its from a Jagmaster.
I already had a spare neck laying about, so I figured why not complete the thing. I have an extra AVRI Jazzmaster pickup. However, to fit these would require some routing, so I might just forget about that and instead use the Lace Sensors I never sold. I was planning on refinishing it, however, the finish actually looks pretty nice and isn't as thick as I thought it would be. The grain looks pretty good.
The body depth is noticeably thinner than a JM or Jaguar, but not as thin as a Mustang iirc.
All I need is a neck plate, a nut, a trem/bridge, and possibly a new pickguard. I should be able to get this all together without spending over $100.

I think I might just do that. I liked how they sounded in the Mustang I used to have, although I never really loved the neck on that guitar. This replacement neck is a pretty typical C shape 25.5" scale, the only "twist" is that it's lefty, but that really shouldn't effect anything once the nut's on.
I do think I will use 500k instead of 250k, it seems like Lace Sensors might benefit from that. Alternately, I might just wire them direct to the pickup selector to the output jack. (Well, maybe have a volume pot too..)

JM pickups are my favorite sound, at least in the neck position. However, I already have a traditional Jazzmaster and another guitar with a JM pickup in it. So perhaps the Laces would be a good change of pace.
This guitar is just going to be a beater that I'll keep in weird alt-tunings, so I don't really care how "pretty" it looks in the end, as long as its playable.

some might love it, but it's not for me
The red seems to work well with fuzz and distortion, but clean does sound pretty bad. I hardly ever use the bridge setting clean though, so it's kind of a moot point.
BTW, Jazzmaster pickups are single coils, not P90s.
edit: Another thing I've considered is selling the pickups I have and getting two AVRI Jaguar pickups.

I haven't seen too many P-90/single guitars.

Well, that's definitely news to me. I guess I was under the impression they were due to my many misreading on custom pickup sites.Hurb wrote:jazzmaster pickups aren't p-90'sGoots. wrote:+1.Mo Rocca wrote:one of each then!

Still, I still haven't seen many P-90/single or a JM/single guitars for that matter.
So, you know, do it with JM's instead.
That's a 25.5 scale neck? The body looks like one of the newer short scale jagmaster bodies so I would think that it wouldn't intonate properly with that neck.
EDIT: stupid ipod touch auto correct changed "intonate" to "intimate"

the newer jagmasters have conversion necks (originally they were 25.5" but a few years ago they changed it). the vista ones were true 24" scale.Billy3000 wrote:That's a 25.5 scale neck? i actually like my red lace.
i used to have it in the bridge of my tele up against a p-90 and i took it out, then i put it in the neck of my duo and fell in love with it.
something about the neck position seems to do it right.
otherwise.... im not sure, then i have taken into account the difference in scale, bridge, wood, electronics or anything else.

Lace sensors are very polarizing. I think part of it is that they pretty much lack character. They don't sound like any other type of pickup, for better or worse.
Not that artist endorsement matters, but Billy Corgan and Jonny Greenwood don't seem to have any problem getting good sounds with them.
My intention with this project is just to get something playable together without spending much money, regardless of aesthetics. I will be ordering parts and piecing this thing together in the next week or two, and I'll be sure to document the progress.
