the RAT sound

Post by nomorebridge »

what is it?

Are RAT pedal's meant to sound like any particular type of amp distortion?....or did someone one day just think that's a nice sound I'll settle on that!

in particular the RAT turbo?

It is somewhat Marshally. This is a Proco RAT2 demo I made

A Turbo RAT is just a RAT with LEDs instead of clipping diodes which makes it louder, and less compressed

Compare til your heart is content. I definately find 'em close to Marshalls, but a more saturated gainy sound and not so spiky.

If you like how it sounds, probably not. The mod cuts the gain a bit, but makes the bass response a lot fuller, especially earlier on the distortion pot.

It's a pretty easy mod to make switchable if you're at all handy with a soldering.

If you crank an old plexi or JMP Marshall all the way up, it sounds like it's walking funny because it's just shit itself and is trying to not drop any out the bottom of it's pantlegs.

RATs are the same thing, except they stride confidently as if to say "the fuck do I care, don't they pay somebody else to clean that up?"

So yeah, pretty "Loud Marshall"-esque at lower volumes, but less of a compressed, "squashed" sound to the final result. I guess that's what I meant.

Of course, at the end of the day I value their versatility in spite of their very basic nature.

That's awesome Doog, way to open 'er up both literally and figuratively. Must be quite the godsend in a live situation.

Yeah, it's great, totally recommend tweaking the RAT if you're up for a few more gain options but still have it sound like a RAT.
