A lot of people have trouble understanding that Mustangs were the cheapo, "bullshit fender" option for most of their pre-kurdtz existence. They were the antithesis of what an electric guitar should be from the late '70s to the early '90s for the vast majority of guitarists. You could find them really cheap and no-one would look down on you for irreversibly making them a bit wackier, they may have even congratulated you on your resourcefulness. Someone more wasteful might have carved up an old Stratocaster, much more of a bonehead move, even moreso by current values.
Yes, they've become highly sought after now... but to be honest, I wouldn't have expected anyone to have seen that coming if I'd been buying guitars at the time, and would probably have an original dakota red pre-cbs COVERED in Human League stickers and Garbage Pail Kids.
