The J Mascis Jazzy and Sonic Youth models are for people of the 80s and 90s who now have money. These guys aren't so interested in SRV or Clapton Strats but they still have money and their kids are starting to leave home.
Again you are missing the point. Those guitars really aren't for you.

There have been no real Fenders since Leo Fender died. The very last G&L models he presided over were the true Fenders and guitars he was constantly engineering. That is the true Fender spirit.Nick wrote: My point was that for what they are, American fenders cost too much, there's not enough available, and the japanese/mexi models aren't "real" fenders to me. Call that snobbish if you will.

Seriously. It's between wanting your guitar made by Mexicans in Mexico, or Mexicans in California (I'm five minutes from the factory)
Math (not science): Someone who got into Sonic Youth in 1990 and was 18 when they did it is now 37, and if they aren't trailer trash (if they are, this doesn't matter because they already bought a Toby Keith signature guitar) then their kids are probably about 16 or so... Maybe Fender is a bit early with the marketing, but not much.

what im trying to say is they missed the target market by 18 years with these guitars.
teh kurdtz came out about 18 years ago now and i have one. notice how im not getting any of this other shit? because they are 18 years late.
john mayer strat makes sense. that album he did what that 3 piece band of his was really good. it kills me inside to say it because everything else the man has ever done was cooperate produced bullshit aimed at mall sluts. i didn't buy that guitar because when it came out it was like right before that 3pc album dropped or something and i was like WTF this guy is a hoser that looks like he is having a face annurism when he plays. i guess that john mayer strat still makes no sense because its just a regular strat wtih some sort of "scoop" pickup and they charge you extra for not giving you a back plate.
if fender dropped a =w= strat back in 97 or 98 you know i would own one. if they dropped it tomorrow i wouldn't buy it because dude hasn't played anything but gibsons for the past 10 years and it wouldn't make sense.
if fender dropped a new all black bronco that that one dude plays from that one band that would make money. i don't even know who that dude is but everyone else on this board seems to. artic monkies maybe?
if squier dropped a new found glory jagmaster that that one dude from that band plays with one humbucker...that would make money. the dude has like 8 different colors too. i hate that shit but its a cool looking guitar.
if squier dropped a whole student line in general along the lines of the classic vibes duo sonic, with music masters II's duo II's and shit like that from the 60's it would rule. hell its just like a mustang without all the endless vomit of mindless people complaining about not knowing how to keep it in tune.
i have noticed a triend that squier is going back to the red/black/white/sunburst bullshit again on thier lines and it makes me sad.
if you look at what rock kids today listen too...like the new wave of "mall punk" its all fucking hyper color rainbows everywehre on thier tshirts and album covers n shit. so they are making guitars in red/black/white/sunburst. for the kids. fucking brilliant. some kid walks into a fucking guitar store with a tshirt that has 15 different colors all over it like a skull puking multi colored lightning bolts and you are going to try and sell him a fucking w/b/r/sb guitar. fucking stupid

that is still a younger market, even if it is one that's growing older.euan wrote:The J Mascis Jazzy and Sonic Youth models are for people of the 80s and 90s who now have money. still, if you wanna be like jmascis, just go get WHATEVER jm you can afford, and play the fucker.
itstoo bad that the only interesting guitars right now are sigs, and sigs are almost uninteresting by nature. the elvis costello one is awesome, too, but still it rather DIY my own cool finish.
To get in on the Gibson argument a page late: I still have a corn on the side of my left thumb from where the fret ends on my SG Special would give me blood blisters. I sold that guitar before 9th grade, so it's been a solid 8 years that I've been scarred by Gibson's quality.
Gibson was also just voted the 5th worst company to work for: http://www.gearwire.com/gibson-lowestra ... loyer.html
Besides that, IDK why we are arguing about Fender's merits. Every year they give you less guitars in fewer colors for more money. Add this to rolling back the number of MIJ imports, and you've got an empirically mismanaged company.

I just gave up and got the fretwork redone (totally, leveling and etc.) on all mine after difficulties, which is an annoying $100 of work to have to put into a guitar costing nearly a grand... Especially after I kept being disappointed with them and selling At least they keep their value well, not that Fenders don't.
They've seemed to be back and forth with the colors dilemma lately. Maybe this Road Worn bullshit would have at least been reasonably priced had it been CIJ...Gibson was also just voted the 5th worst company to work for: http://www.gearwire.com/gibson-lowestra ... loyer.html

I can believe everything I've read about the terrible corporate ethos of Gibson. This snivelling apology about the darkfire piece of over-designed nonsense reeks of BS from the highest level:
http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/F ... dark-fire/

I would be extremely afraid of owning a guitar like the Dark Fire. If something goes wrong (and no doubt it would), it's back to Gibson with it, not to your workbench or local tech.
I'm sure it's cool as hell, but even by the standards of the most meticulous of luthiers, that much shit in one guitar is destined to have something break in the first year of ownership.

Very, very true. The digital stuff out now is an appealing road to take in terms of price, flexibility, and sound quality. It's like buying a computer, though. You need to go in with the knowledge that it will need to be replaced in about 3-4 years.Nick wrote:I would be extremely afraid of owning a guitar like the Dark Fire. My grandpa is still using the analog calculator he bought in 1968, but is on his 4th or 5th computer in 10 years. Which was the better value? The calculator cost the equivalent of $3000 when new, but he's used it every day for 40 years. Each computer has cost $400-$600 (due to reusing software, monitors, etc.), but has had to be replaced regularly. Of course, the computer can do infinitely more.
A digital guitar or amp isn't a bad thing inandof itself, musicians in general are just very skeptical of fine instruments being made disposable. Unfortunately, Gibson seems to be taking this route.
Eh, I'd say the comparison is more along the lines of hybrid cars; having more to go wrong, more to maintain, etc. I honestly don't think digital guitar stuff is going to evolve or crash as rapidly as PCs, if it sounds good to your ears now it'll sound good 20 years down the road, and the components aren't as cumbersome either. The heart and soul of the guitar is still the wood that it's made of, the digital part it's brain, so even if it needs a brain transplant every 5 years or so, I doubt you'll need to buy an all new guitar or be that detatched.DuoSonicBoy wrote: A digital guitar or amp isn't a bad thing inandof itself, musicians in general are just very skeptical of fine instruments being made disposable. Also, Gibson has a couple "robots" amidst dozens of passive electric guitars, I don't know if I'd say they're going down that route any more than Fender is with its VG strat, or any of the other companies that are experimenting with built in effects/midi/digital preamps.
