Quality speaker cables

Post by James »

I bought a cable for £4 to hook my bassman up to my cab. It was the perfect length and seemed quite decent quality. Looks the part and all that. Recently the sound cut out and after spending a short while thinking "this is going to be expensive" I found the problem to be the speaker cable being a bit dodgy.

None of the shops here seem to stock these cables for some reason. Despite them all having heads and cabs. One shop did have a marshall one in recently but it looked like the sort of cable that costs £1.50 and breaks before you use it.

I want to buy a decent quality one that will last, but I don't know what I should be looking to spend or anything about them at all really. I know I can buy fantastic quality guitar cables for <£10, so I wouldn't expect to be paying more than £20 or something for this.

Any particular brand to go for?

That's probably a good idea actually.

What about this? I'd prefer right angled jacks but it seems like not a bad deal.

I'll look into buying some cable to make my own now.

Fer real. The Illuminati 3 used to use speaker cables made out of lawnmower powercable, as recommended to us by an amp tech.

Yeah that looks pretty awesome. Probably in line with the cost for jacks and some cable if you factor in shipping from Germany?

And then use the puke to make speaker cables?

Replace "scene" with "poor" and you'll be closer.

Is Klotz the brand euan was raving about at Doogfest II? This seems like an affordable and good option.

I'd consider buying some cable to make my own but I'm only going to need one, so I'll just have a length of cable sat in the parts box. I think this ebay deal or a similar one is a good option.

Lots of people seem to have buy good quality jacks and cable and then make cables up to sell on ebay like this. The prices are great for the quality.

yeah as long as it's a thick cable that can handle it i guess making your own you can make it as long (or short) as you like

klotz shortest speaker cables are still 1m which is a bit long i guess. i've both the cheaper one and gold jacks one, i've had the gold jacks one longest and use it the most, the other one is more like a backup (had both when i was playing bass and guitar in bands). i think it's 3 years old or so ? 30eur isn't that cheap, lately i've been buying secondhand cables for 5 eur for three haha.. but for a speaker cable, i just felt that klotz are reliable so i wouldn't have to replace it anytime soon anyway

i think it's also just because they have to endure less than instrument cables lying all over the place on a stage and getting covered with shoes and beer and all other shit, speakercables don't move much, they just sit on the back of your amp so as long as it's thick enough to handle the power and not get burned to fuck you really can't go wrong. i think i opted for klotz straight away because my fav cable i've had for like.. forever, is a klotz one. just to be sure
