I know exactly what you mean. Once you get that elusive vintage guitar you wanted for years you just end up wrapping it up in cotton wool. I know Hurb uses his but not outside his home as far as i know. In fact, Kathie is so pissed most my guitars sit in cases she bought me a load of wall hangers. She said i should at least display the guitars if i'm not using them.
Let the collectors collect and the players play is my opinion, they become nothing much more than investments once the novelty wears off. Stick with the MIM mike and get a few decent backups, its money better spent that way.

now i feel like an oddbod using my vintages to gig with. they're never out of my sight, mind, and i think i'm careful enough that they won't get stolen.

Good for you dude, i wish i could. Same with my 65 parts Mustang, i bought it off LRC solely to gig with as it worked out cheaper than buying another JS. I gigged it once, somebody knocked beer over it and everyone had their grubby hands all over it so that was that.
If i played live in a more conservative enviroment with a proper stage and better crowd control i would probably gig them both.

i never thought about anyone chucking beer at them! mind you, i've never seen that happen in a club gig, audiences in scotland are actually pretty polite. the only one i wouldn't gig with would be the competition mustang, all the rest i bought as players and don't mind bashing them about a wee bit. in fact, my belt buckle does more damage than anything else.

damn, that is a beauty, dude, but othomas2 is probably right. i don't think i would feel comfortable playing a nearly $3000, 40-year-old guitar as my main instrument. . . maybe if i had more cash.

that said, i'm switching up to my avri jag at rehearsal this week. want to see if using it in conjunction w/ my newly outfitted pedal board and either chico's super reverb OR marshall will give extra mojo. . .

never understood why everyone wears oversized pants when they play guitar.

i feel that way about rickenbacker, ill never get one, and if i do, i may find it less fun, because i cant mess with it. but i still want it!

That's why I sold the Ric 330 I owned several years back. I never felt secure enough to really PLAY it. It just begged to be set on a padded stand and caressed with a diaper. My mustang gets thrown on the floor, jumped on, and is still in-tune.

Despite what i've previously said that is one of the things i love about Fenders, they seem hardy and parts are replaceable. Gibsons make me nervous with the headstock angle, set neck and in some cases the plastic klusons.

man, if only that were true. then i could i excuse fender for charging such outrageous prices for guitars they've ruined by literally whipping them with chains and filing them with. . . files.
