does anyone have any experience with these?

i have been thinking of getting one, just to have a nice sounding apartment amp, as my HRD will be moving to the recording/ rehearsal space pretty soon. i cant really use it here anyway.

i have been sort of obsessed with the idea of an amp with so little headroom that you just crank it and your guitar controls are your amp controls. seems fun and raw and creative to me. something tells me my melody maker and silvertone would both sound incredible thru a tiny tube amp.

i would be willing to do some modification too, if the amp seems worth it. might even make a good recording tool.

anyway, any input?



PS- sorry if these hav been talked to death already, or anything. i did a search and couldnt really find much. :)

i was tempted to buy one a few months back. i've played a couple at a local shop near me, and was really quite impressed.

i can justify a small amp if i move the bigun out of the house, though.

I've had one for about 3 weeks, well the Gretsch G5222, which is the same. It hums too much, but sounds good. Not rehearsed with it yet, so I don't know if it'll be loud enough when playing with a drummer, but it's nice for playing in the living room.

yeah, when i played the ones at the shop, i didn't know if it would get out in front of a band w/o some help from a p.a., but for recording/rehearsal/fucking around, i think it's sweet tits mcgee.

Some people have said it's just the routing of the wires that causes the hum. It's not bad enough to bother me.

It's probably due to the fact it has cheap transformers and poor shielding and coiling of the heater filament cables. I.e. nothing that is cheap (and not potentially dangerous) to try and fix yourself.

It's more expensive, but check out the Blackstar ht-5. I got one of the stack versions. It is 2 channel w/footswitch and 3 band EQ. You could probably gig with it....definitely smaller gigs or a/b and use the HRD for cleans and the ht5 for dirt...

Look at the blackstar thread to see some pics, etc.

Mine dun gone BOOMded.

But it was good while it was working, I think it needs a speaker ugprade though, bit too farty with low notes.

hmm...

luckily, hum doesnt really bother me. my HRD is quiet enough, and i would be using this amp for teh dirty tonez anyway. or practice.

Bear in mind that 5 watts or not, it's going to be loud as hell if you want it to crunch up. It has no Master Volume so you'll be making a LOT of noise to get it dirty. I think Mickie is right - the Blackstat HT-5 looks good, or a Tiny Terror. Both are Master Volume heads with Overdrive sounds.

those are good amps, but i can't justify the cost. good point about the master volume tho. looks like ill still need my dist+ for the medium volume dirty tones.

also, isnt there a way i can replace tubes to make it break up at lower volumes? couldnt be expensive to do, as it only has 2 tubes. also, those lil speakers cant be too expensive.

It's not that loud really, I used ti play mine wide open, or as qide open as I could get it without the speaker going all flubby and it was fine at home.

I have one and I love, although the speaker that's in it sin't up to much, so I'm usually using mine with a cabinet.

It only has a four ohm output, which is annoying, given how much better it is through a cabinet.

I have gigged with mine before, using somebody elses four ohm four by ten. It sounded amazing, and was plenty loud for a decent sized venue (that place was about two hundred, two fifty capacity), although we don't have a drummer, so I don't know how well it would keep up with that.

I'd love to have a four ohm cab to play it through. It should be alright with a 8 ohm as well shouldn't it?

Why they made the PPC112 16 ohm I will never know.

It sounds good with an eight ohm, but ever since I blew my last one up, I've been cautious about putting it through that.

The four ohm sounded a good bit better and more open/airy/mojoriffic. It was also a good deal louder.

I don't know how much of the difference in tone was down to the fact that I'm comparing a four ohm/eight ohm or im comparing a 410/412. I'd imagine that the 410 is going to sound more trebly and stuff anyway.

So you can use 2 of them with Orange heads :wink:
