Free project

Post by anthoney »

I got an email from a guy who misunderstood a guitar related craigslist posting I made. Long story short, He asked me how much I would charge to put his two Strats back together. Strats are so easy to work with it, I just told him I'd do both for $50. He agreed, dropped them off and then asked me if I'd be interested in just fixing one and keeping the other as a trade. I'm not a big fan of Strats but I like the color of this one and I love the neck. Anyway, I have a Strat project now so I thought I'd see if anyone has any ideas. I'm thinking a mint guard would look nice but I don't know. The pickups are one Lace Sensor and two Godin rail pickups...

I don't like strats either but this is quite a score. I reckon you got at least $300 worth of parts for free!
Is that wear from actual playing or some relic job?

I'm really not sure...to me, it really looks used and abused. I don't really have a good eye for relic jobs though.

Yeah, I couldn't get a good picture. It's not as yellow as the first picture and not as white as the second picture. Somewhere in between...like a cream I guess.

The colour looks like how Oly White ages under polyester finishes. Is that a MIM?

Kissing the 3-way switch's ass!

Looks like a MIM Classic 50s or Japanese '57 that's been Clapton'd or mini-buckered or whatever, I'd put some duncan antiquities or Fender Japan '57/'62s in it. I'd reccomend against a mint guard as that's strictly a '60s affair, the maple board and single ply guard suit each other better, at least to trainspotters.

Cool. Love it. Great project. That neck has teh Keef Richardz vibe.
Everyone should own a Strat besides whatever they use, it should be mandatory, the guitars importance in the history of modern music and guitar design/build is so immense.

What kind of craigslist postings are you making that lead people to give you free strats? I would like to copy your technique. :)

I think I'd leave it as old-school as possible. I kinda agree with Paul_ here. I'm not sure I'd do much to it except make it play great, and put good pickups in it.

Nice, traditional, old-school vibe.

Oh, and route for Floyd Rose and Humbuckorz obviously.

Haha, yeah I realized that sounded kinda weird. I made a posting about wanting to buy a guitar project. The guy either misread it or just assumed that I work on guitars. Either way, a free guitar for assembling a Strat isn't a bad deal.

That actually sounds pretty cool. Any suggestions on where to get a guard made?
