Join, read, and ask questions! The people here are the most gracious, helpful, and knowledgeable people in the DIY community. It doesn't matter that there are 5 Fuzz Face threads per day, they still answer every question thoughtfully.
If you're interested in just fuzz, check out http://fuzzcentral.ssguitar.com/ - great site with lots of schematics and good articles.
A good beginner project is on the DIY page.

This is the page I used: http://arts.ucsc.edu/EMS/Music/tech_bac ... Schem.html
To be honest, I was building pedals for months before I really understood schematics. Even now, I'm still a bit of a noob at it. The most important thing is to start building simple projects and experimenting. Try to find some small, cheap projects with good layouts and wiring diagrams. You'd be amazed how much you learn by accident!

Might make more sense to have it in the effects section.
