But surely you'd just turn it back up on the Hotplate. I suppose that'd be annoying, but it's not like you'd be playing a gig with it or anything.

The whole point is to get your amp to overdrive the power tubes at a sensible volume. If you're overdriving the power tubes, then it's not clean.
