Fender TWIN Question
There's a Twin "Evil Twin" Red Knob up for sale locally.
I've been wanting a Twin for forever.
It has two channels, and the specs he lists says the one channel is only 20W while the other is 100W.
Does this solve the issue of them being so unbearably loud?
Are these shit or anything close to sounding like a "real" Twin?
I HAS TO FUCKING KNOW.
Mike, no need to reply. We already know you hate the Twin.

Yeah but I know a little bit about them.
I think he's confused and is referring to a global 25W mode it has. It does have a seperate Gain channel though meaning you'll be able to get Fender's approximation to ROCK TONES out of it.
However it's safe to say that if you're after a classic Twin, then this one is not it.

That's what I was wanting to know. Thanks.Mike wrote:Yeah but I know a little bit about them.

Mickie was telling me the other day that the problem with Twin's was their lack of having a "practice" volume at all, so I was seeing the 25W mode as a great way to fix that.
I'm really not interested in Fender's "GAIN CHANNEL" as I want a Twin for the cleans. So if you say this thing sucks bwls as a real "Twin" then I'll just keep looking. Thanks for the info.

I think quite a lot of them have that 25W mode from what I gather, I could have sworn their reissue of the Blackface one, the '65 Twin Reverb does, but I can't see it on the Fender.com specs list (doesn't mean it's not there though as we well know)
My knowledge of the Silverfaces is completely rubbish though.

Yeah, that's why I have been scanning classifieds and CL daily for a reasonable price for a Silverface. At worst I could swap a few passive parts and get it to "blackface spec" if I really ended up caring that much about it. I just liked the sound of the reissue at Guitar Center.

I think the "twin amp" has that 100w/25w thing, but the 65 reissue definetly does not.Mike wrote:I think quite a lot of them have that 25W mode from what I gather, I could have sworn their reissue of the Blackface one, the '65 Twin Reverb does, but I can't see it on the Fender.com specs list (doesn't mean it's not there though as we well know)

I have no idea what the difference is.

Yeah, it would be a cool project to monkey around inside one of them, they were built in such a way I reckon Modification is a breeze.PenPen wrote:Yeah, that's why I have been scanning classifieds and CL daily for a reasonable price for a Silverface. I've got the 90s model of that version... I'm not sure the red knob one has the 25W mode...PenPen wrote: Mickie was telling me the other day that the problem with Twin's was their lack of having a "practice" volume at all, so I was seeing the 25W mode as a great way to fix that.
However the 25W mode makes no difference at all at low volumes. They really are performance amps only and far too loud to use at home as a practice amp...
Unless you're going to be gigging it or rehearsing in a fairly large space, I'd advise against getting one...
I'll say again, The Twin reverb was damn near the only choice for me, practice as well as gigs. I require my cleans to compete with the drums. rock and roll drums, yo.
Watts and switches between watts. And probably price, too.Mike wrote:Right.aen wrote:I think the "twin amp" has that 100w/25w thing, but the 65 reissue definetly does not.Mike wrote:I think quite a lot of them have that 25W mode from what I gather, I could have sworn their reissue of the Blackface one, the '65 Twin Reverb does, but I can't see it on the Fender.com specs list (doesn't mean it's not there though as we well know)

Let me put it this way. I have a Vox Cambridge reissue that's 30W solid state power amp, and it can't compete with drums. I have a 50W tube Univox head into a 2x12, that's what I use when playing with other people. The Twin would be a swapout with my "loud" setup, as I still do like the Univox head. This is what the Twin would be for. My Vox is the "practice" amp.vivadeluxxe wrote:I've got the 90s model of that version... Can't you test it before? The Red Knobs are sometimes not as bad as they look. My brother uses a Red Knob Showman and that one sounds pretty nice. The Master Volume in later Silverfaces and Red Knobs is not the real thing to Fender freaks, but it is a useful feature. Although my Silverface MV is nearly unable to break up at acceptable volume.
From what I've heard, that "evil" one is a clean monster. I would give it a try, as they are sold much cheaper than the 70ties amps here in Europe. Don't know if it is like that in USA too.
