Identity of the Dano Transparent Overdrive and Fuzz Revealed

Post by benecol »

Oh, I'm very excited about this, although I'm not sure how I feel about the morality of the whole thing. Some clever fellas over at freestompboxes have been picking the new Dano pedals apart and drawing schematics, and guess what? The Fuzz is a complete rip off of the Frantone Peach Fuzz, and the Transparent Overdrive is a clone of the Timmy with only one slight difference.

I know Kim, Euan and me have all been slavering over Peach Fuzzes - I might grab one and report back...

(then probably the Overdrive too).

Freestompboxes are too concerned with what the schematic is, and not what it sounds like.

Sounds pretty close to me: if I'm still all hot under the colour by morning, I might treat myself. Payday and all...

It's so cheap, why not if you like it.

Whenever Danelectro does anything I try and see what's up.

I found every clip of the fuzz I could, hoping it would be something I liked. I didn't like it.

I commented both overdrives sounded good, but I don't care about overdrive pedals. I'm not gonna go out and buy one now just cause it's a clone of some overhyped overdrive.

But I also might be thinking of the Frantone Cream Puff, now that I think about it. Still doesn't change the fact I don't care for the Dano Cool Cat fuzz.

(not benecol :D ) but yes the FZ-2 and Behringer make a copy of that now, since Boss hasn't made it for awhile.

But I don't think it sounds exactly like an Univox Superfuzz, it's clearly based on it though.

I have one of those SF300 and I've never heard a Univox Superfuzz but I can tell you the Behringer sounds like absolute shit.
The only use I got out of it is mangling vocals. It failed epically at guitar and I had all but medeocre results with bass.

I'll fucking send it to anybody who wants to pay shipping.

I thought you'd like this news; I'm waiting for Mike to tip up and maybe have a look at the two schems, then I'll probably go for it.

Where are the schematics, on FreeStompBoxes?

I've built the Timmy and it does sound great, I wouldn't agree that it's over-hyped as Jcyphe says, the builder seems pretty damn honest, low sale price of $100 for the Timmy and $150 for the Tim even though they sell for miles more on ebay, and he's never hidden anything about the circuit in goop or anything. I'm sure he'll continue to sell even if it becomes common knowledge Danelectro have ripped him off because people will be willing to wait to have a real one.

I've always known that the Transparent Overdrive was something special, it's a bit of a let down to know it's just a clone. for £33 or whatever they were selling it for at that Music Shop it's a no brainer though, it's a fantastic sounding pedal. Plus you lot can all get your Peach Fuzz on.

The Behringer may sound crappy, but then so does the Boss FZ-2. I owned both at the same time, and they sounded identical so I sold the Boss.

It is an aquired taste and the built in gate that kills sustain is annoying, but that fuzz 1 setting is PHAT!

On that twofer deal? I think this has demosnstrated what shortscale's ethical position is...

Mine's the same, by the way. I was very impressed when I met James and we chatted about pedals that he chose not to buy Behringer from an ethical point of view because of their copying (I'm para-phrasing here, obviously), but my policy tends to be: fuck 'em. I don't think this will stop people buying Timmy's from Paul C, but I do feel a little bad for him, but he always seems to have more demand than he can/wants to cope with.

Having said all that, if they cloned TGD, we'd all be up in arms...
