Sunn head. Trigger... Pulled!

Post by plesiosaurus »

This dude is trying to sell his Sunn head.

It's missing the grill cloth and the reverb tank is gone. He wants $300 for it, which seems like a pretty decent deal.
Being an ignoramus, would it be a decent idea to buy it?

do you like the way it sounds?
does it sound like 300 bucks to your ears?
and is the re-sale value greater than 300?

I have a very similar sun head and it is amazing, and nothing sounds quite like it. but 300 f0r that seems a tiny bit steep, especially without verb

I was thinking the same. Without the reverb tank and without the front of the amp you would be lucky to get much more out of it than 200-250 I would think unless you were willing to wait for the right guy who REALLY wanted that amp. I would bater the guy down. Figure out how much the amp would be worth on ebay with all of the missing stuff working, and then start subtracting the cost of fixing it. Offer that much.

I would definitely consider purchasing that amp. As long as the reverb circuit is still intact then you can easily buy a replacement to suit your needs. (That's also guessing that the reverb tank was connected through a "standard" or easy to come by cable connection). I think everyone else has given you the answers and advise that you need to decide whether or not you want this amp.

Just a side thought, if you did end up buying this head, maybe you could add a plexiglass panel to the front, because right now it looks pretty sweet as is.
OOOO, mount the reverb to the plexiglass and watch the springs vibrate.

He agreed to sell it for 250. I'll probably pick it up tomorrow.

Excited!

Now I need to find a cab that'll sound decent with it.

Suggestions?

250=great deal really, you could easily cut a fron out of some plywood, add grill cloth, and no one would know.
the transformer for the reverb on these go out regularly I guess. Mine was bad when I got it, so expect that to be the case. does the tremolo work on it? they have beautiful sounding tremolos.
But most importantly these amps make bass player obsolete 8)

BONE CRUSHING LOW END

as far as cabs, really the bigger the better, haha. I play mine through a old 6x10 cab and sometimes a 2x15 bassman cab. you can find 70s 2x15 bassman cabs for cheap usually.

here's mine, different name, but looks like all the controls are the same

Great! My current band doesn't even have a bass player. Now we really don't need one.

I think for fun as a grill cloth I am going to put in some goofy fabric with dinosaurs or something on it from like a kids bed sheet.

The trem works!

((woof))

In the name of convenience I don't really want anything larger than a 2x15 or a 2x12. What might I expect to pay for a 2x15 bassman?

oh man
so clean

he had it in his closet for a year or two so hadn't played it in a while and when i fired it up he said "aw man now i don't want to sell it".

i'm excited. the guy who had it before the guy i bought it from straight up took out the reverb because he wanted it to be lighter or something, so i imagine the circuit is still intact and it just needs a tank.

it's a little dusty and has got some dings but it sings real pretty.

it says 8 ohm speaker and 4 ohm for external speaker. not too sure what that means.

I fuckin' lucked out.

I went out to my favorite local music store and the dude just happened to have a great condition Sunn 2x12 with the original speakers. It was basically made for a 100s. He gave it to me for 150.

Sounds awesome. Sooooooooooooooo loud.

they're so cute together!

Holy shit dude, nice fucking scores. The cab is an unbelievable coincidence, can't believe you walked into a shop looking for a cheap cab for your sunn head and got that.
