bass mutes

anyone know anything about them?


i know that the jazz bass had them.
i know the mustang bass had them, but ive never seen one with them on.

any other fenders or any bass for that matter use them?

id assume most were thrown away, as i never see them on vintage models.

Bloke at work has a Hofner (I think) shortscale bass with a sponge block between the strings and the bridge cover - is this what you mean? Sounds ace - will attempt to get pics, if that's any use...

don't forget that the old ebo basses had them.

The earliest Jazz (woulda been a stack knob too) and Mustang basses had felt mutes, this odd one-for-each-string deal. For the Jazz, they were little strips of metal folded into a springy vee shape with a strip of felt on top & were mounted under the strings with screws going directly into the body. The Jazz version of these mutes were still available from Fender right up until a couple years ago but no more. Don't think I've ever gotten a really good closeup look at the Mustang ones but they were a little different and most likely the reason why the Mustang bass bridge plate was so large since they were mounted entirely on the bridge (apparently with no screws involved).

For Precisions & later Jazzes it was nothing more than a foam rubber strip stuck with adhesive inside the bridge covers. Most guys that want that sound these days just stick the aforementioned sponge or something under the strings.

aahhh, that was enlightening about the early jazz mutes, i was always unsure of them.
