rites of spring is the only emo band i know the name of. my chemical romance are just a whiny rock band.silly_rabbit_band wrote:I'm not, I was taking a shot in the dark, I don't keep up with emo, so.... and my chemical romance is the only emo band I know the name of.Malik wrote:You say that as if you're not 100% sure it is.silly_rabbit_band wrote: I think it's the guy from my chemical romance or some other emo band.

truth. i see SDRE as more direct lineage of rites of spring, fugazi, etc. where as kids think MCR is emo because they sing are "sad," and they wear eyeliner.Zaphod wrote:they're miles away from emo. as is everthing that people call emo today.
go and listen to some sunny day real estate, they're actual emo and fucking good.
im going to stab the next fool who sees my glasses and utters "emo." i actually MISS the days when i got constantly compared to weezer and elvis costello.
i think they look more like jarvis cocker, or even b-boy type apparel.

to be fair, back in the day they were more 50's and less 80's. see "ladies dresses" photo in the photo thread.
the point is, emo is a form of particularly intelligible and relatable hardcore, bands like SDRE and ATD-I can be reasonably linked to it, and bands like dashboard confessional are just whiny radio music for poser 17 year olds who don't know what they like yet.
however, i do understand it being a guilty pleasure, i was listening to some thursday the other day, hadn't since like 10th grade... and i may have sort of enjoyed it... a little...

i like big glasses like that, they remind of the glasses i used to get to choose from when i got them from the nhs.
it was like big "anorak" style frames (you know the type i'm sure) or huge think glasses, which at the time seemed hideous.
i wish i could get a decent pair of glasses, i think i look much better with glasses it's just they always don't quite work when i go to an optician and i can't wear them too often.

big frames look better on me, for sure. i have a giant head/ face.
i do kinda go for a nerd look. the pic makes them look a little more face consuming than they really are tho
id rather be called poindexter than "emo." at least there is some truth to it.
and, whoa, my "soulpatch" isnt nearly that defined in real life. geez.

lately ive been into dan deacon style frames, the super totally 80s ones that everyone had, men and women, but realise that i need to put on a few pounds, lose a bit of hair, and turn up the irony level a few notches before i can pull of the "hipster or soccer dad?" look.Zaphod wrote:i like big glasses like that, they remind of the glasses i used to get to choose from when i got them from the nhs.

not sure exactly what you mean by anorak style. all i can think of is that twee types in the 80's wore anoraks, and were sometimes called anoraks. is that what you are talking about? must be something like the deacon frames.

this one better demonstrates the proportionality to my face, which i think is actually pretty good. my hair on the other hand... its early still. these are like the saddest looking photos ive ever taken of myself.

i dont follow. is it because i have a "soulpatch" or because i used the word "soulpatch?"James wrote:'Soulpatch' + those glasses = you're emo (the MCR kind)
usually those guys are clean shaven, and have black and greasy or birdlike hair. and wear lots of accessories.
if i shave clean i have a babyface even worse, and if i just shave the soulpatch i have a weird neckbeard.
and i can grow a stache at all.
IM A MESS!!

i think ill write some sort of emotional rock song about it.
