holy ass.

can you imagine? j dilla all "what is that" about your beats? thats like jimi hendrix wanting to hear you practice guitar.

the 3000 is actually older than the 2000, interesting to hear dilla was more into it. i think it was even 12 bit, as opposed to the 16 of the 2000.

i like the layouts of those old ones, but im really none too keen on swapping out zip100 discs, so the 2500 seems right for me. ill just have to save up!

thanks for posting that clip.

i think the MPC 2000XL MCD has a flash drive.

i pretty sure David Sitek has two Roland SP-808. those have zip drives too. if the practical functionaliy of Zip drives doesn't work i totally understand that though...

ill look into that, if the 2kxl has flash, id love to have it, and i could get one cheaper. i wonder how large of a card it can take though? the way memory is getting cheaper and huger, getting a just 5 year old machine can mean serious limitations in the memory dept., by current standards. it kinda sucks, actually. i wish we could improve data compression at the rate we improve memory, so that we could just be putting more and more into the same bits, and older stuff wouldnt obsolesce quite as rapidly.

the pads on the rolands, even the higher end ones, dont feel as nice to me. and, theres something about an akai that i like, kind of an old school mojo kind of bullshit ideology, but i just wanna play what the greats played. its worked for this long for this many producers, yanno?

edit- david sitek is pretty badassed, though. although it looks like he didnt produce the first TVOTR EP, which was my favorite sound of theirs so far... love that percussive repetitive sample sound.

i've never had any memory issues with mine, and it only has 32mb of ram. sounds laughable now but when they first came out it was huge.

seems like memory usage depends on personal technique. itd be hard to make a beat that used more than 32mb total of memory, i would imagine, but if you are using longer loops, esp in stereo, and alot of polyphony and layering, 32mb probably wouldnt go a long way.

also, some of the older ones were 12 bit instead of 16 bit, which wouldnt require as much memory.

im kind of into the 12 bit lower memory ones in a way, like, making more with less. its why i use a string of stompboxes rather than a big programmed multi FX unit, etc.

if you're using massive sampled loops, yes, you'll run into problems eventually, but if you're programming with individually sampled hit sounds and augmenting sequences with external MIDI sources (synths etc) it'll be fine. only thing is, you can only load one program at a time on an MPC2000, so if a different song has a different sound bank you need to reload between songs in a live situation.

right. i feel like the expanded memory and the ease of switching datasets of the 2500 will make it far more versatile in ways unseen.

i do plan to use my electribe drum machine for some basic drum synthesis (it sounds like a 909) and to take some of the workload off the mpc. thatll be for dancier songs, really, with 4/4 kicks and handclaps, and steady hats, midi synched of course.. itll be less usable for hip hop type stuff, but the MPC alone will be a champ in that dept, i reckon.

really, i want to use it for making weird noises, and for atmospheric sounds in conjunction with live drums and guitar. also for triggering loops like on certain MBV songs, like "soon," for instance.
