What gauge strings...

Post by Chico Malo »

do you use on your acoustic guitars?

and what kind?

i recently bought a very nice breedlove guitar from mickey and it has 13s. they feel way too heavy for me.

should this be in a guitar thread?

i always used 11s when i had an acoustic, but alot of people would probably say "thats too light." so your only option really is to go with 12s. you have to.

thats how i felt!

plus, if its an acoustic (or any guitar) with no rod, i use string guage as kind of a way to adjust action by giving the neck relief/ letting it straighten a bit. so if 11s get me there, then thats what ill use one that guitar.

12's or 13's. I use 11's on my electrics and I prefer heavier gauges. If I get too light of a gauge my bends are wayyyyy off because they are too easy.

Ironically, i had the same question myself. I just bought that acoustic/electric ibanez dealie and it sounds sweet, but i think 13s are on there and it's a little heavy, so i bought some martin marquis 12s or 11s...hopefully they feel a tit bit better.

im like the opposite. i put 12s on my melody maker instead of my usual 10s, to get it to intonate correctly, and its fine except the few riffs i play that involve bends come out really unnaturally.

why doesnt someone make a retrofit wraparound tailpiece that just has the compensation in the right places for modern strings? all the current solutions probably work but you lose the elegance and simplicity. adding a few parts to my MM is like doubling the overall parts count.

12s because that's the only gauge the store brand string from MGR come in. They're like $2.50 a set - just awesome.

i do like the sound of 13s but i like to bend strings a bit and 13s are too stiff.
