I'm afraid I've no experience with Fralin pickups. Any idea what they go for new? £50 a pickup is sort of inline with Seymour Duncan prices...

Well I can get 'em about £120 plus another 20-30 from the US on Ebay. Must admit I hadn't given a huge amount of thought about pups at this stage. The Fralin's are output 6 and 6.8 neck and bridge. I did vital instant tone-research and found out that Travis BeansT500's are less than this so they pass the Albini-fetish test (knowing full well that output is hardly the only factor in tone but....)

I do like (nay LOVE) RodVonBons Prison stang and the sound he get in this video: but I'm set on normal vintage black mustang covers. Anyhoo this is really a little ways down t'line...next up FINISH STRIPPING.

(Couldn't locate how to hide images in the faq or the 'Read This First' - If needed please point me in the right direction and I'll smallify them))

Pringle Cat says SO BCB when the **** are you going to strip this guitar??

Image

Using THIS (and freakishly brutish powah):

Image

Hubble bubble toil and trouble.... the white stuff on there is about a half inch thick and bit rubbery too....had to scrape with a flat knife to get oodles of it off.

Image

Look at what I found?! Quick photo taken in case is comes off in the process. Anyone Know what this means?? (Inb4 'infinity' or '8')

Image

90% there after a couple of hours. Ran out of stripper and there is some clear under coat left which I think I should remove totally. Will need to clean up the cavities and then get to fine-sanding it to a smooth finish before any painting etc.

Image

Image

There a few dings that will need a bit of filling but nothing drastic. The most interesting thing is that the body has had five pickguard holes filled and redrilled. Also in the back there are two perfectly doweled round holes right on the mid-line at each end of the body - was this some thing to do with the build process I wonder? Doesn't look like a repair job as such.

It's quite strange seeing that body stripped like that. I was considering a daphne blue refin when I had it but decided to wait to see if the guitar felt like a 'keeper'. I was always curious as to what was under the thick white paint though.

Aen will be emailing ya later tonight around 5pm your time in that regard.

On topic though I've located a source of Comp Orange Nitro Spray. Anyone have eye-witness opinion on the stripe colour? Monitors vary so much I'd be glad to hear about one in the 'flesh'.

Cheers.

Here are a few pics of the stripes on my vintage comp orange guitars. They have all faded differently, so the colors are not exactly the same, but
they look to me to be kind of an orange/rose color IRL. It's hard to explain, but it almost looks like they wern't sprayed as heavily as other
competitions and the orange body color underneath effects the stripe color.

That's great - So you think the stripe is sprayed on top of the main colour? I've seen other projects where they spray the colour of the stripe on first, mask it then spray the rest on. Is there a noticable 'rise' where the stripes lay?

I'm intrigued to find out how 'orange' this comp orange apray is - to be honest I'm hoping it is more in line with a more yellow faded look like yours but I'll just have towait and see. Soon as I get it I'll do a little test and post up some pics.

BTW those guitars give me trouser trouble - amazing!

The stripe on all the competition Mustangs are over the body color and there is no noticable ridge or anything like that. On some of my other guitars the stripes are wearing off from playing them and the body color is coming through.
Robert, you are partly right. The color on the reissue is not the same as the originals and they are in a slightly different posistion, but they are the same spacing.

I'm getting the Nitro Orange from the Manchester guitar tech (mentioned upthread) - I assume it will be an un-aged colour. Given this assumption would a either fiesta red or dakota red red be near enough for the comp stripe? see them here before and after clear coat: http://www.manchesterguitartech.co.uk/lacquer.html

Thanks once again for all the good advice people!

I layed both a Fiesta Red and a Dakota Red guitar next to the stripes and neither is close, really.
I would say though that if the color you get is really orange do dakota and if it's really yellow do fiesta, if those are your only options.
The reissue comp orange body color is way more orange than the old guitars and looks like they used dakota.
And like I said before the body color of the old ones seems to effect the stripe color and they've faded so much it's hard to say. I would think Fender didn't mix up a batch of some "new" color just to do theses stripes, so I would guess they used fiesta.
