solid state distortion?

I've been loving my Orange Crush for practice and open mics. The distortion is fizzy, but the clean sounds are a lot like an old champ.

Nothing is gonna beat my Ampeg Jet for distortion, but I still think SS has everything I need for most of my playing.

I have an old Fender M-80 solid state (I think it's basically the same thing) It has a totally monster sound. Classic fender and VERY loud. The only time I've really ever had it at 10 for any legnth of time was in the rehearsal studio. The guitarist from the other band that shared the studio with us had one of those Trace Elliot super twin amps. It was twice the size of the little fender but the M-80 buried it at high volumes.

If you engage the distortion on mine nothing happens. It must have something blown in its guts. I only ever use it clean anyway, all the dirt comes from pedals.

My mom bought me one back in '89 or so, and it's still there in my SoCal bedroom. The Distortion is interesting, and somewhat useful when you have to dial in a heavy dist that can give a bit to sit in the mix.

seriously, i've been thinking about changing to SS. i have a custom made champ-a-like amp, but it has a 10" speaker, EQ and built-in slap-back delay

i almost never have it being distorted on its own, because it's just too loud. so i'm thinking if i might sell it and get a bigger SS amp...

Aye, for a certain type of metal, solid state's the way to go. Personally, I'd still rather have a big fucking tube amp but that's just me.

The most important thing to do when considering what amps sound good is to use your own ears and make your own mind up regardless of all internet hyperbole, lest you become like that Kurtdz-fixated goon, Armchair Bronco.

You don't want that.

Plenty of solid state amps sound great.

two jc120s on tulsa CL for 400. seems fair for a big loud feature packed amp.

I don't really like metal too much, but i can appreciate the player's talent. Sometimes i think my little SS vox combo sounds better than my blues jr, especially in the distortion category. I haven't played through a top notch tube amp in forever though.
