No, that's an example where you should have just stayed with a white guard. Tort on Greens and Blues is ugly as shit.
I disagree. If it's nice, faithfully reproduced tortoiseshell (I say this because there is a lot of horrible looking tortoiseshell pickguard material available), then no, it will work on bold colours, or just about any colour for that matter; especially solid colour bodies and some sunburst. Tortoiseshell is very traditional and is very easy to pair with just about anything. To me, it's the same way a maple or rosewood fretboard can work with any colour body.

Where is a picture of this guitar?
Nah, it's ugly as shit. I have book here that tells me so.

While I do like it, it may be a bit more Sisters of Mercy than I can rightfully rock.

For the record everybody, I did ask for opinions. And I was provided them, and I was thankful.

Note also that they are fucking opinions, color theory goes right out the window when it comes to personal taste. Narco is entitled to stick by his rules and regulations if he wants to limit himself by those said rules and regulations. I, personally, could really give fuck all what color theory says about my guitar... I'm more interested in what it says about me. It has certainly caused strong reaction in people, both good and bad... so I'd say job done. It wouldn't be so polarizing if it wasn't unique, perhaps even interesting.

Oh, and Grave Digger kicks ass for the record.

BTW... maybe this'll all make a bit sense if you see who it is that will be rocking said guitar:

All black with a green and orange tie and I still look rad. Color theory can eat my dick.

Before the pyres burn completely out of control here, and just while the last of the angry mob are gathering up their pitchforks, can we please remember that at the end of the very first post, endsjustifymeans asked for our opinions.

I get no impression at all that Narco Martenot sticks rigidly to colour theory, or is the fun police in any other respect, as the Mustang he has built out of dead ostriches and fossils would seem to attest. He just made the foolish mistake of politely offering his opinion.

And Livesley: fuck off. And for what it's worth, it came with that guard. And hey! Thought we were all about playing guitars, not looking at them, right?*

It looks horrible and would be better with almost any other guard.
I'm surprised you haven't sold it in a piquant offset-fit after finding it it's not completely nitro, you bloody poser.

I don't see anything wrong with what Narco is posting, there's also nothing wrong with me telling you how shocking that pickguard is on your Jazzmaster. Sort it out.

I support the tort guard jazzy. I like they way it looks... but that might be a good reason to change it now that I think about it.

It was a good natured request to fuck off, obviously. I just think the mint guard looks a bit wishy-washy, whereas I like the slightly garish clash of the tort and green. But my favourite jazzmaster colour combination is Ocean Turquoise Metallic with a tort guard, and we're bound to differ on that one.

And I'm just going to rise above the poly comments. Mainly because they're too near the truth to be funny, and I'm a very vain man.

And it's only a poly undercoat, OK?

I proudly play guitars that are poly'd up the wazzoo because no amount of Fender 70s paint could stop my rock power.

OTM and Tort? You're fucking deranged.

Hahaha. This forum is great for so many reasons. It makes me feel like I've time traveled back to 2001, and I've landed at Jag-Stang.com.

Wow dude that looks great. I hope you plan on wearing some brown shoes with those black trousers as well. Throw in an olive jacket and you are set.

You really gave colour theory the ole stone cold stunner.

jimmy's point is valid though, not about colour theory, that's an important part of design but usually it's an means to an end. evoking certain emotions in your audience or simply drawing people in.

with this guitar endsjustifymeans is the target audience. he doesn't have to adhere to colour theory to try and make his guitar appealing because he is his own target audience. if he likes it he has succeeded.

you must have a hell of a job getting dressed in the morning, what do i want to connotate today?

No, I have no difficulty getting dressed. I work with high-end clothing daily, so I mix colours and patterns everyday. I see a lot of people who are getting into clothing who seem like they have no idea what they are doing and want help, but this is pretty extreme. I say this because the way you mix and match clothing is fairly universal and applies to just about any type of design involving a colour scheme and a pattern (which is everything, ever, I guess).
