Up to a point, I really strongly agree with this statement - it's a fantastic way to road-test certain sounds and effects on the cheap. However, there are certain effects where they are utterly unrepresentative; my old Zoom 505 had a terrible ringmod setting. It was untuneable, and just gave everything a 'Daleks go to China' sound. I remember chatting with a friend wondering what the fuck the point was of ring mods. Flash forward a few years, and upon learning that it's meant to be tuneable, it's now one of my favourite effects. Haha, ditto on my Zoom amp- not having a blend or tune parameter makes it all a bit pointless. I have a Digitech GSP-7 and it's very limiting. The distortions are pretty good, as are the flange, chorus and delay funcions. However, they are bundled together, so you may have a nice chorus and distortion sound, but may not be able to swap that same distortion sound to one that has a nice delay. Also, if you want to be able to toggle effect on and off, you have to have a midi foot controller, program your initial sound to one button, and then clone that sound to another patch, then zero the values for that effect and program that to another button (unless you can scroll back to the original in the same button).
I use it with a DOD FX loop pedal, so I can use the dealys and such just like a stomp box.

I can remember way back in the mists of time (alright, 1991) my mate Jon selling loads of ace pedals (mainly his uncle's, including an analogue delay) in order to fund the purchase one of the very first Zooms for £110. I think Multi FX are great. The Gain department for me is the only place they truly lack, but lets be fair, if anyone is going to be snobby about that they ought to be concentrating on Guitar>Valve Amp for their tone rather than a stompbox anyway.
What you get for the money is good although separate pedals are more versatile concerning adjustment. But you have to consider most Effects have maybe half a dozen usuable sounds anyway, so as example; being able to turn the rate setting up full on a Flanger wont appeal to the majority of effects users.
Multi FX give you the best of whatever effect has to offer. In the manufacturers opinion of course.
Johnny Marr has hardly ever played with much gain, so i'd say the GT-5 is an excellent choice.

i bought a behringer Vamp2 to plug straight into my PA when a friend came over and i needed a second set up from the COUGAR1000. I ended up liking it so much i just use it daily with the COUGAR1000 for dirt and the occasional tap delay. I would reckon its pretty much useless for stage use since the up/down floor peddal that comes with it takes so long to switch between pre-sets. Its primary function is for practice anyways.

i've just been watching this, it's the new RP1000 that supposed to be a poor mans route to the whole voodoo labs switches and rack mount jobbies.
