I don't understand your point, or your attitude. How are we supposed to celebrate your success unless we can really hear what you have done? We might aswell discuss what may or may not be on the other side of a brick wall.Telenator wrote:If I were a manufacturer looking to sell thousands of these I would get into the whole video thing. When all is said and done and the 30 retro-fits I have are sold, I still will not have made any real profit from this. The materials and workmanship are very expensive and I have a year of my time invested in this so far. 30 pickups X $250 = $7500. Total! That's it. No more! $7500.
Take away the cost of materials, hand machining the bobbins, hand winding the coils, assembling the pickups and wiring and potting, and the 8 months development that went into this and there just isn't a whole lot of money leftover. I even bought several MIM Re-issue pickups and two original 70's WRHB's to do the research.
This whole thing was a just a cool project that unfolded in real time and we all enjoyed it. Many people contributed to it in the form of information, specifications and just general enthusiasm. We developed a trust and comraderie over the project as it unfolded much the same as you guys seem to trust eachother here. But now it's time to do something else. Further investment here just isn't worth it. There's nothing to prove.
We can take eachother at our word and celebrate, or we can doubt. I read this thread and there were plenty of "stones cast." No big deal. That's what happens when people put themselves out there and try to do something worthwhile. But every so often, a group of people will rally behind a project and it's beautiful thing!
And the only way to do that is a three way video like Benecol suggested. If you were really invested in pure information exchange you would do it for the love of that.
Plenty of us on this website make demo videos so people can hear what gear sounds like and make their own minds up. Seeing as you're talking about a pickup retrofit, it just seems only sensible to me that you make a before/after demo with a RI guitar at the very least, and with the same setup and an original guitar. Without any frame of reference I'm not sure what we're even discussing. Mind you, I'm unsurprised, your M.O. seems to be to just ignore direct requests.

No, that's what happens when you make outlandish claims without backing yourself up with evidence. It's also what happens when you deflect requests for A/B demos.Telenator wrote:I read this thread and there were plenty of "stones cast." No big deal. OK. Pony Up, or leave the Passive-Aggressive Tone at home. You're not Ghandi.Get that killer Wide Range Humbucker Tone from our "retro-fit" pickup that looks exactly like the Fender 1970's original and nails the vintage tone of this elusive design.
That's really not the case, though, is it? I feel you're being very unfair - you've come to a forum renowned for its demos, where we have suggested you make some demos (not an expensive thing to do, which could really help your sales), only to get a bit hurt over the whole thing. I support your endeavours and all that, and you could be making landmines or something instead, but I'd need a bit more in the way of evidence before I parted with my cash (and I really want to - you'd not believe how much I dream about a '72 thinline).Telenator wrote: Anyway, I was hoping to engage in an intelligent discussion and share what I've learned with a bunch of fellow guitar junkies. If you guys want to just cast stones without the benefit of knowledge, I can't help you.

If he's only planning to sell 30 pickups and 16 or so are already sold, why does he care so much what people on shortscale think?

I can only look at this in amusement. I have nothing to sell guys. Clearly you've all made up your minds long before I stopped in. There has been a lot interest in this project and when I happened by this site and saw some of the comments here, I thought I would stop in and make myself available. Not as an expert on the topic, but simply as the guy behind the project. You've made it perfectly clear that you all know better and that no further comment is necessary. What a great way to welcome people and grow a web forum.

But we haven't done that.Telenator wrote:Clearly you've all made up your minds long before I stopped in.

I even said I'd like to buy a pair, but as a pretty regular punter, would need slightly more in the way of documentary evidence. What has happened here is you've pitched up, been hugely passive aggressive, and taken constructive criticism as some sort of damning verdict. I'll state it again: sadly, I don't think you came here to take part in any sort of discussion. I think you came here so you could bitch about your poor treatment back at other forums.
