Purge and Splurge: Mini Fuzz demo added!

Post by ultratwin »

With me selling off a few as of late, over the past 2 months I've acquired [/quietly] a few goodies to play around with. Some to keep, others to likely give away. Hopefully samples within the week.

I found a kid here who does quite a good job at wiring up homemade editions of this and that: The psycho sticker covers the Colorsound 1-knob Fuzz, a nasty silicon buzzer with Nintendo 8-bit synth tendencies and crunchy decay. He also made a nice little A/B Box (dual-light LED) and very chunky Krank Maximus copy, although the Maxi is way too trebley to be a decent copy and is going to be given away to a mid/heavy gain drive-needing friend. $35 a pop, immaculately wired interiors.

The "Seize" is a COT50 copy with separate volume control, and is really not that bad for low-gain "dial in with the guitar's volume pot" kind of simple easy-light-breakup OD. The "why so serious" box with kid in bearsuit(?) is a Phase 90 deal. Does exactly what it should, $40 a pop for these two from a guy who lives in the SW part of the peninsula.

I grabbed the Box of Metal from good friend and HCFX forum member Seifukusha last week, and I don't think I've ever loved a distortion box this much. It's big gain and does really natural amp distortion tones all on its own, yet is transparent enough that you can actually hear your guitar. Strangely it doesn't like boost pedals on either end(!), but sounds great even into a clean amp. Rich harmonics galore, mirror poses and perpetual face scowl-inspiring.

Very cool stuff indeed. And crazy prices.

The Box Of Metal is classic ZVex. Remember the Super HardOn? Simple MOSFET Booster.

3x Super Hard On's cascaded + BSIAB2 Tone Stack = Box Of Rock
5x Super Hard On's cascaded + Marshall Tone Stack = Box Of Metal

The gate is very cool though. I'm surprised how good those two pedals sound considering their origins, but they are very good sounding. I can imagine the Box Of Metal being Grin Inducing.

A-ha...I guess that also explains why the BOR is so popular in Korea among session doods as well. The gate on the BOM is indeed fun to play with, at 5:00 w/single coils it keeps things plenty quiet but delightfully opens up without anyone noticing. Gonna try some close mic'ing after this weekend, although my ProJr doesn't sound it's best unless the neighbors are complainin'(and haven't picked up a Terror yet), so we'll see what happens.

That layout is about the tightest I've seen - is it PCB or Perf?

'Tis a perf!

Did a simple video while guests were over, with the Mini DV-cam, for better or for worse. During part of it Cindi insisted that I communicate with her and answer a few questions, hence more distracted pentatonic retardo-riffs. Anyway, I really like this thing on single note and up-the neck chords. For the record, you can hear Cindi go "Oppa, da haesuh?" at the end, which is roughly "Hey brother, you done now?". :P

Unity gain is at about 12:30~1:00

Shit. I was totally going to put out a pedal locally called "The House of Rock" (which is the name of the best venue in town) which is exactly 3 clean boosters in a row, but you can bypass the middle one. Thats a bit too close, I guess, with the name anyway.

That's like, not the name of the local venue at all though.
