Ok, I got this at like, 1:45 yesterday, and 2/3 of Magafaun
showed up at about 2 to try out pedals, so Brad (right) probably has more playing time on the Jag than I do. Allright, untrue, I played a lot lst ngiht after a rock show, and put proper strings on it.
OK SO! the looks : pretty boneriffic, great oly white, nice "big patterned" tort, a medium tinted neck. A little cluttered up with the trem unit moved up and the big ft hambackers. Cool, but totally irrelevant: Late 60's? style logo, never had one of those before. grade: B+
The Feels: SOLID, dude. It's one of those gutars that feels like it's all one piece. I love that shit. Exception being, that it makes me terrified to open anything up or alter it at all, for fear that the mojo arrows will fall out and be lost on the carpet. Luckily, the action and truss rod are right on, so I shouldnt ever have to take the fucking neck off. (seriously Fender, you changed the bridge and the pickups AND THE SWITCHING AND THE TREM LOCATION BUT YOU CAN'T GIVE IT A PROPER TRUSS ROD? Ok, doesn't matter, cause it's adjusted just fine. There's one small spot on the back of the neck, it feels like theres a tiny grain of sand stuck in it, I don't know if thats from the previous owner of a finish flaw. But i took a fingernail to it and moslty smoothed it out.
Shortscale is very different, but I expected that. It feels nice to be there again, reminds me of the 69 I had that Hurb rocks now.
The trem is not as comfy as the AVRI I had on my JM project, but I cant explain or quantify that, other than to say that it has a similar range but slightly awkward arm and a bit stiffer operation. Everyhting stays WHERE IT BELONGS thanks to the FenderTOM even under my brand of chordal abuse. Thank you Fender for stabulizing the Jag/Jazz trem, evin if the purists hate it. If you hadn't raised the price to fuck of $1000 dollars, I bet you would have made a bunch of money on these.
Medium Jumbo frets are gong to take some getting used to having nothing but vintagey frets for a couple years now. Noticably heavier than my other guitars, but I've been rockcing a basswood suparlight Robert OG tele for the last couple weeks, so Im a little spoiled. The Jag's not a shoulder breaker or anything.
Grade: A-
Teh Sondz/controls: I'm doing these together because they are pretty tightly knit together.
Humbuckers: I'm not noticing any loss of highs or clarity, so cool. I'm not noticing any of the things I usually dislike about humbuckers. Great, this means I save time and money on pickup changes.
The coil splitting/blending shizzle: useless. The humbuckers are alegedly "lesser" or weaker 'buckers, and when you start to split them with the upper controls, that definetly comes to light. Cause when you roll them all the way to "single coily" they sound like the tin can telephone you made in grade school. You know I'm a single coil guy, so it's not that I just don't like the sound.
I went for some Miketonez and put it through my homemade overdrive, and that shit was fun. It sounded all like AcDc or some shit. Pretty different than a single coil.
Kill switch: Erm, Ok, I usually only use one pickup at a time (neck), so in most situations I'm going to have 2 kill switches on this guitar. Plus it's real little and kind of awkward to use.
NOrmal Switches: Standard Jag fare, except the low cut switch seems to be almost non-effective, and (maybe the previous owner flipped it upside down) cause with it in the down position I get a little bit less bass nad with the switch up it sounds normal. Anyway, not my favorite switching scheme, but I don't do much switching. Plus this guitar was hired for Feedback Manipulation, so it's going to be mostly bridge pickup, trem shakin' playing the angles type of stuff.
Normal VOlume and Tone: with the addition of the dedicated kill switch, these are almost entirely extraneously to your old pal Aen, but I made sure to check and they do work. Nice knobs.
Sound Grade: B nothing special, but not disagreeable
control grade: C for your old pal Aen, not much there for me.
However this guitar seems to be more than the sum of it's parts, "Feel" carrying a hell of a lot of weight in my grading scale. Final Grade B+ A definite keper, it's going to do it's job and look like tits on a lasergun doing it. It's nice. Is it $1000 nice? No Fucking way. For that kind of coin I better cum when I pick it up. And cum again when I start playing. This is a $700 guitar wearing someone else's price tag.
