Help with cake guitar sounds.

Post by Progrockabuse »

hey all,
i've been trying to find info on the net on the kind of gear cake's lead guitars uses. i absolutely love cake and the sound he gets. it's sort of nasal sounding in places and has a lot of clarity. all i can gauge is a fender deville and a hollow body. any ideas what other stuff he uses.

cheers

kinda like this

I always thought their recorded guitar tone sounded like a Mustang into a small combo; kinda boxy and twangy.

More of a guess than an informed opinion- that's just what it sounds like to me. Some tracks definately sound like a mellow hollowbody of sorts (album version of Frank Sinatra).

I reckon: Mustang bridge pickup > mid gain TS-style OD > lots of mids, little low and highs on the amp would get you close for sure.

i quite like that acoustic sound, i think he cranks that through a champ too. been working out arco arena and nugget today. it's hard to get hold of some of their stuff.

i have comfort eagle and fashion nugget. thanks anyway doog.

been trying to get prolonging the magic.

found this just.

Gibson Chet Atkins Tennessean guitar
Guild X170 guitar
Fender Blues DeVille amp (miked with Audix D-3)
Pro-Co Ratt
MXR Phase 90

that's from comfort eagle onwards i'm guessing. so i'm kinda nearly there. i have a phase 90 and a blues deluxe (smaller than the deville). just need to get me a rat.

i'm a BIG ASSED fucking fan of cake. and i've always wondered what they used too. to me it sounds like something with p90s and a deville type amp, eq'd for some sweet mids/bass...but i'm not sure.

Yeah, supposedly they're tight as hell live.

I'm not sure what they used, but I always thought that weak pups were in the mix somewhere. Which is a good thing.
