AudioCrono- Roachello's Optical Theremin

Post by roachello »

Yes, I scrapped the pedalboard idea for lack of interest and instead did an optical theremin. The technology exists already, but it hasn't been utilized into an existing product or entitiy.

So...

This was meant to be a lighting project. The assignment was to utilize light in a new and innovative way. I did so through the interplay of light and sound.

The aesthetics were supposed to be "bitchin". That means if this was made into a real product, it probably wouldn't look as crazy as my design, but perhaps a more toned down version.

How it works- Photoresistors for pitch and volume create all the magic. When you create shadow, the sound mimics the movement (oscillations). The more light there is, the higher the pitch and vice versa. The light sensor is super sensitive. If you dim the light of the room, as seen in the 2nd video, the pitch lowers as well. The momentary mute simulates the "Scratching" of DJs.

That is fantastic, and it completely looks like something out of eXistenZ. Great work as usual.

Cooler than ice!

Baram (here on my lap) just folded his ears back in discontent as I enjoyed the squaking from that second video. :P

That's very cool.

Stick a face on it and mass market it to kids as an interactive musical pet.
