why they didn't just do a MIM 50's RI with lace sensors, I don't know... unless the pickups would push the cost up too much...

That's one of my two main guitars, only with EMG81/HA pickups, instead of HB sized P90s. It feels solid and sometimes you can find them for about $200 used.

He used to use American '57 RI strats as subs for his '70s hardtail strat that he used in the studio, which was the guitar they copied for his sig model (neck and bridgewise). He had stock pickups in it for Gish and laces for Siamese/Mellon collie. Also, Fender have taken lace sensors out of all/most of their guitars that 'em, not sure why but they no longer have exclusivity on them.
