Mike's Pedal Thread

Signs that you're spending too much on the internet, part III: After PMing back and forth with Hurb last night about his fuzz needs, I went up to bed <insert fibs about taking Mrs Benecol to heaven and back here>, read my book for a bit, settled down to sleep, then approximately five minutes later, shouted "Ultralord!". My wife was startled awake, and my explanation that that was the pedal I was trying to think of for Hurb, one of my 'internet friends' didn't go down too well at all.Mike wrote:That one there they linked popped into my head. It's properly nutso. Really fucking loud and insane.
There's also another design benecol sent me ages ago which is called the Ultra Lord that I think I'll play around with on breadboard.
Hurb, an Ultralord would do most of the things you're after. It's like a beefy, bassy, more controllable fuzz factory. Plus, the maker's a dick who frequently rips off the effects community, so no guilt in Mike cloning it. I used to have one, but had to sell it to pay for an amp. I loved it, and it made my cats and my kids freak out. A good sign in a fuzz.
The Saltbooster is really fundamental on my pedalboards these days. When I'm playing with a second guitarist, it basically doubles up all the sounds I can get. If I'm playing "rhythm", I keep it off, then when I need to stand out, I click it on and suddenly I'm slightly louder, with that slightly salty flavouring too (works best into the TT). I've got quite a wide pointer knob on it, so I can adjust the volume with my feet between songs if I need to adjust the level at all. Ideal.
Mike, I've been thinking about how I can best get another pedal off you (I haven't been able to justify it until now). I love my DS-2's Turbo II mode, it makes single note stuff higher up the fretboard sound cool. The best example of that I could find was this demo:

At about 1:06. I could never really put my finger on it what that was, but as the demo says it's "fat midrange". Is there anyway to get a distortion pedal with more of that effect?

Fair enough, I know it was a bit "Jim'll Fix It" asking you that. I'm sure I'll find another way to get another Mike pedal, it seems these days having just one isn't fashionable.Mike wrote:I don't really know Malik, I'm not really fond of that sound and also haven't come across any dirt pedals that sound like that.
