Recording Audio at Gigs.

Post by DanHeron »

The camera I ordered finally is in stock and is being delivered tomorrow (wooo!). And, although its a compact camera, it shoots really good hi-def videos. Especially impressive in low light. I was thinking I could take some live videos of a few of my mates bands and stuff, however the built in mic wont be able to handle the loud music. So, I thought I could record the audio separately and layer it over the video..

What's the best way to record audio? I could ask the venues if I could record from the line out on the mixing desk, but at smaller venues they don't usually mic up the amps so they wouldnt record from the mixing desk. Also I have seen people on here really like that Zoom hand held audio recorded thing? That seems like a good portable option. What do people think?

Also, here's a live video taken with the camera I'm getting (i don't know the band. watch in HD):

My vote is for the Zoom H2. While I have no hands-on experience and am stating such right now so you can choose to disregard, I have read many great reviews and seen it talked up a great deal on many a forum. I just read a review in a copy of Recording Magazine I had, and it renewed my interest in getting one. Amazon has them right now for $163. I am going to buy one very soon to use for recording rehearsals, as my current recording setup (Zoom PS-04 handheld 4-track with mixer and mics) is too much of a hassle. My only concern is how well it will perform at very high SPLs when the rock is bein' brought.

Awesome choice on the camera as well; that video looks great. I have an older Panasonic DMC-LC80, and it is fantastic. The Panasonic Lumix line are some of the greatest cameras for any amount of money, and I think the included Leica lenses on many of them really set them apart from the point-and-shoot Canons and Olympuses. I believe a lot of the Lumix cameras are basically the same as some of their much more expensive Leica digital camera counterparts.

Cool, I will look into the Zoom some more then. Seems like a good option.

Yeah, the camera looks really good - cant wait to get my hands on it! Apparently it's exactly the same as the Leica D-Lux 4, besides the logo's on the camera body. But the d-lux 4 goes for £200 more than the LX3. Apparently it has better software, but not worth an extra £200.

i can't see you doing much better than the H2 for price/quality really.

plus you can use it as a USB condenser mic as far as i know.
