Hi-Watt amps?

Post by blacktaxi »

I was playing around with Guitar Rig the other day, and there's the Hi-Watt amp & cab model (it's called High White there). I have never played through a real HiWatt head, and I wonder does the rig model sounds like the real thing? I really liked that kind of sound, and I wonder how do I get such tone? Get a real HiWatt head?

Anyway, what's so special about their schematic or cab that makes them sound unique?

hi-watts were british made tube amps that shared heritage with the early sound city brand as well (as in, the sound city stuff as basically a rebadged hi-watt). the early ones were built like tanks. all hand wired point to point goodness. dave gilmour, robert fripp and tommy bolin were all pretty big hi-watt users. gilmour still is. they tend to have a lot of clean head room too. i know james was hankering after a hi-watt a while ago. can't vouch for the reissues or new models, as i've not tried them. i'd probably have a look on craiglist or the bay, you could always try a sound city if funds are low.

This was the very HiWatt that James, Mike and I started acting like the chimps from the start of 2001 in front of. Very loud, very clean amps with beautiful innards. Prog left Pete Townshend off that list - Live at Leeds is all HiWatts.
