Mustangs/Jagstangs that don't have vintage sized frets?

Post by smora »

Are there any iterations of these guitars that have something bigger than the small vintage-sized frets? I think the original Jagstangs had jumbo frets and the reissues have vintage frets? Is that right? What about the Mustang? I'm sure all the US originals have the smaller frets, but are there any version of the reissues that have medium-jumbo or jumbo frets?

I'm pretty sure all the Japanese reissue Mustangs and Jag-Stangs have the same frets, the smaller vintage-sized ones. The only necks that I believe are different are the Jaguar HHs and the Classic Player Jags. Mustangs and Jag-Stangs are all the same.

Plus the Jag-Stang was never really "reissued" as such, they just made a second run. "Original" and "Reissue" are terms normally only used by eBay sellers trying to make the big bucks on their "Original" Jag-Stangs. Aside from the differences in the MIJ and CIJ, and the sticker/decal in the "Designed by Kurt Cobain" on the headstock, they're identical.

Jag-Stangs always came with vintage sized frets, the only difference between the "originals" and "re-issues" is the thing that says "designed by Kurt Cobain" on the back of the headstock (removable sticker on "originals," decal on "re-issue")

They essentially never reissued the Jag-Stang. It was still being made in Japan after they stopped importing them to the US in '99, before the "reissue" came out production had only stopped for like, a few months.

I question your ability to discern jumbo frets from vintage frets. They're probably just worn down from TOO MANY POWERCHORDSSS.

Huh? I have 2 Jagstangs and both have the vintage fret wire. 1 is an original run and was used when i bought it,
but the other one i bought brand new in 2003, so i know it came stock with small vintage frets.

Teh Kurdtz had Jumbos on his JS? I thought he hated them and preferd the small ones.

kurts equpment even states it clear as day.
The resulting instrument has an alder body, plus a 24-inch scale maple neck with a rosewood fretboard and vintage-style fretwire

The second run of Jag-Stangs are also made of alder opposed to basswood, right? That's according to wiki anyway.

Ok, so all Mustangs and Jag-Stangs use vintage-sized frets, got that covered. Now, what about the neck widths at the nut? What percentage of the Japanese Mustangs are A width? What about the Jag-Stangs? Are those all A or B width? Also, how do the neck contours differ between Mustangs and Jag-Stangs? I'd imagine they're the same, but what do you guys say?

Thanks for the help guys!

The necks are all the same - Jap Mustangs and Jag-Stangs are all B width with the same profile.
