Using Gibson-spaced pups on a Fender-spaced guitar

Post by Armchair Bronco »

I want to put some HB-sized P90's on my Squier HH Jagmaster. Almost all aftermarket P90's use Gibson-style spacing for the pole pieces, but my Jagmaster has a short-scale Fender-style string spacing.

What are the cons of installing Gibson-spaced P90 pups on a Fender-type guitar like mine?

the poles won't quite align with the strings, which will give a slight reduction in volume and clarity. But P90s are cool, so do it.

You will get a more muddy sound out of them. It is not recommended.

I think it will be fine. Squiers have a closer string spacing than USA fenders. they're actually pretty close to gibson spacing.

Given how P90s sound anyway I would think it would be exascerbating the effect.

I just measured my Les Paul and it's right in between 2 and 2-1/16". I believe Jagmasters have the normal 2 1/16" Squier string spacing. so the poles would be less than 1/32" off on the Squier. really not gonna make a difference. however, if you used a Fender spaced pickup it would be 1/16" off from the Squier spacing (Fender spacing is 2-3/16").

Fender Black Dove.

"Black Dove" sounds cooler than "P-90" too.
