i want something that sounds like a bassman on the edge of blowin' up. IE, super chunky, rumbly, deep overdrive. But also something i could dial back in for real subtle dirt. Tone control is fairly important...
One that i could clone for myself would be a big bonus, too.

mike's timmy clone sounds like that. You can get a nice chunky tube like sound, but also does nice cleaner sounds.

Only in the sense that it distorts using diodes in the feedback loop of an opamp.

i don't know what a bassman in its last breath sounds like, but the hotcake is super boomy when the gain is all the way up on low strings, which i know are your favourite

Rat with Ruetz mod. I love the shit out of mine. It replaced the vintage big muff on my board. Now your SHIVA is used much more!
