Super Sonic question.

Post by tomin8r »

Hi, I'm new to the forum and I have a question about the Squier Super Sonic.
I have a '97 one, and I think that I am eventually getting another one, but going to swap the pickups for Jaguar or Strat single coils.
My question is, where would the best place to be to get a custom pickguard for a Super Sonic?

Thanks

Tom

Welcome to the forums

Any pics of this beast?

A good thing you could do is make a pickguard out of clear acrylic (stewmac) and send it off to be copied.

Thank you :)
I have some pictures of it around, but they need to be re uploaded onto my computer.
So I should make a copy and send it to be made?
Sounds like an interesting idea. Thanks

synchronicity!

I had the retarded idea to stick the tele pickups I bought from haze in my supersonic, so I drew out a template and headed around the block to this cool little independant guitar store, who were apparently too cool and sorta blew me off cause they were super busy and apparently I would be waiting weeks for the pickguard to be made, they recommended another store all the way across town.

I couldn't be fucked starting an EPIC QUEST all the way out to newtown.... too impatient was I, so I just used the cardboard template as a pickguard, reinforced with tape underneath around the edges of the pickup holes and where any screws would go through. Feel free to laugh/vomit at my half ass mod:

I kept all the wiring the same, and two volumes + tele humbuckers = very trebly. Sounds really nice clean though.
If I do keep the pickups in for a while I'll get a proper black pickguard made, and rewire to volume + tone (dome) knobs... probably with coil tap on the tone. oh, and get myself a bridge cover. yes.

Heh, I like the black Super Sonic with the ever creepy Jack Nicholson on it, it gives it some pretty badass class.
Cardboard sounds like the ultimate cheap pickguard material, I might just give it a go someday.

I made mine. A couple of the screw holes were off by a tiny bit but it ended up fitting quite nicely. I could trace it for you if you like?

Paul_Ray, I've seen your Super Sonic around the boards when I was browsing the other day before I joined.
How much did it cost to get the pickguard material, and where'd you get it? Also, would it be cheaper to trace the existing guard and make it yourself than have someone else make it for you?
Someday I might take you up on that offer if I get another one and horribly fail at making the pickguard.

This is the stupidest suggestion ever. If you can make a pickguard out of acrylic you can make your own.

I have made pickguards before, and it's not all that hard. All you need is some wood to make a template, some G clamps, a Workbench and a Jigsaw & Router

Pickguard Blanks are quite cheap and can be found easily by googling, are you in the UK, US or somewhere else?

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm up in the Great White North of Canada, I can get stuff in from the States pretty easily. I'll look into getting a pickguard blank if I ever get the cash or the will power to buy another Super Sonic. I got the stock pickups swapped for the Duncan Jazz/JB set, and it sounds like a beast, but I've always been curious about Jaguar single coils, having never owned(nor played) a Jaguar.

If you're going for Jag pickups go straight to ones out of either the AVRI or MIM Jaguars, or Seymour Duncan etc versions. The CIJ ones are squealy and a bit.. crap.

Try places like WD music, All parts, Guitar Parts Resource. They should all be a google search away.
