Sonic Youth signature Jazzmasters (official)

Not big effects users, until relatively recently, young Michael.

Two uggo guitars, mind, with very little of interest going on - I'd be more excited about the Lee if I was arsed about humbuckers. But I'm not. My interest is slightly piqued by the tweaked widerangers, though.

The prototypes of these two looked alot better. Non Matching headstocks and if i remember the body had a different and better finish.
A Kim one might not be far round the corner, seen her recently with a red jazzmaster with black soapbars, black guard the works.

Given how much abuse Thurston dishes out, I can understand why he'd want the control plate for easier repairs. Lee mostly just stands there, so he doesn't need it.

Yeah, far too rich for my blood. My Jaguar was Â£550 new and that's the most I have ever spent on a guitar.

They are an upgraded version of AVRI/Thin Skins, so the price is not really surprising. They seem to be about the same as the Costello JM, the John Mayer Strat, the Eric Johnson strat, etc... signature American models aren't cheap.

The Mascis version has a thick poly finish, basswood body, cheaper hardware, and mediocre pickups. If you like the finish and pickguard then it is ideal, but there are quite few things about it that differ from the guitars that Mascis usually recorded with.

These SY sigs however seem to be the exact specifications. (well, we will see about details of the wide rangers, and they also lack a Mastery Bridge but that is understandable -- it will probably be quite some time before Fender gets license of the Mastery, if ever)

The generation that listened to bands like Pavement, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., etc are mostly in their mid-to-late 20's now, some even older. Most signature models aren't targeted at teenagers who are looking to get their first nice guitar. Fender's top-shelf stuff still ends up costing less than the majority of Gibson's. $1500 for the Strat/JM you want is more obtainable for a kid than that $2500 Les Paul.

If you were to buy parts individually to build one of these guitars, you would end up approaching $1000, perhaps more. So I don't see why people feel that the price on these is so ridiculous. Fender still offers less-specialized JM models for less money, so there really shouldn't be an outrage on the premium they put on their artist models.

Most who really listened are way older than mid 20's what are you talking about. If you were a teenager when you listened to these bands you're damn near 40 if not 40 already. The people who are in their twenties and listened to these bands are second wavers and people who probably get into them through Nirvana.

Yeah, truth. Either way, the target market for these is not a 15 y/o with a minimum-wage summer job. It's older people with disposable income that have nostalgia.

But I wonder if the nostalgia will be that strong for these bands. They were always more underground and it seems kind of stupid to buy a guitar from a band that was highly into customization and multiple guitars. Besides the use of wide range pickups in the Jazzblaster there is nothing approaching an iconic guitar here, at all. Yes they are identified with Jazzmasters but are they really identified with a particular Jazzmaster?

Seems really stupid, sorry it seems you're into these but I think they're beyond lame in every way.
