Marshall 100 Watt Lead combo

Post by othomas2 »

Just at my parents visiting and decided to drag my 2nd amp out of the cupboard with the intention of maybe using more actively and possibly bringing it back home to London one day.

It's a Marshall '100 Watt Lead combo'. It's extremely heavy and full transistor jobby... but it's as loud as hell !!... Despite it not being a tube amp I think it sounds great and very JCM 800'ish to my ear. I've never managed to find out much info about it apart from a pic inside a book I own called 'The Guitar Book' by Tom Wheeler (see pics) Which leaves to believe they're a bit unusual. Anyone ever see anything like it ???

It needs some kind of service... the switches cutting out slightly... crackling knobs etc but nothing major.

I've owned this amp for about 12 years and think I paid £200 for it then.

I've never seen anything like it. You should definitely make a demo of it.

Don't have anythin to video it with as I'm away from home. Could use my newish phone I suppose :o

Pretty much drained all the resources from the net.

The model no is 2200 which I later found on the back of the amp. duh...

There is a head equivalent which was known as 2098. But there is still a lack of info.

Don't suppose anyone is able to zoom in on this image, enough to be able to read it ?

I could read some of that. It basically just describes the amp and says it's made from the finest Marshall craftsmanship etc.

They're great amps. the Bigger brother of my Lead12 which was my first ever amp, they do have a very nice classic Marshall sound to them.

Cheers for that !! that's pretty cheap sums ... I thought they'd maybe be in the £300 region now but perhaps I'm wrong.

I think I probably paid about £150 originally, now I think about it.

Such a great sound for so little money, it'd blow the MG100 out of the water IMO..

Thanks for the response everyone.

What sorta Marshall combos (30 watt tube) could I look at that'd give the classic grunt of a marshall ?

Like a Haze 40 or JTM 30... or somethin else. ?? Basically a marshall equivalent to the Peavey classic 30 that I have now ?

cheers

I think you're right Mike... been playing the 800 head at work a lot and it certainly appeals to me, especially when it's cranked.

Seems like a nice palette to work from in terms of adding effects...

Excuse my ignorance, these combos don't sell new anymore do they ?

... & would it be an big improvement on a DSL400 ?

------
Just uploading a sample vid of the marshall 2200 as we speak.

Nah second hand only but they go for cheaper than the heads. My JCM800 sounds great overdriven and is also a great pedal amp.

Much better than the DSL401.

Sorry, that's the one I meant. Cheers for the info mike.

How about a battle between a JCM 800 combo and an Orange Rocker 30 ?

I always like your slightly breaking up clean sound in your demos, which is a Tiny Terror right ?

cheers...

haha it's generally meant to be crystal clean but sometimes I have too much gain set. That's the TT which is similar to the Rocker30, yeah.

The Rocker has two channels also, Clean channel is a little dark though.
