Cheers Mike, have been reading up on the Marshalls for most of the day and trying to see whats what.

I think I'm quite keen to get my hands on the single channel marshall jcm 800 no.4010, 1x12. Seems like a good all rounder to me.

A simple no non sense amp that can give me a nice gritty/bitey clean that's reasonably compact... with the inherent unmistakable Marshall sound ?... think this is a good one to go for ? are there better versions ?

Yeah that's pretty much the Gold standard mate, you could also look into the JMP 2x12" 50W combos too, same circuit but different cosmetics (amp panel on top of amp)
