I think it's doable with some of the kits that give you everything including chassis and instructions. I'm planning to do this one day but I'll be starting small and working up. Probably with something like a Champ first up and maybe topping out at a Fender Deluxe Reverb which is pretty much the only amp apart from the ones I have that I would really like to own.

I'd thought about trying my hand at that tube cricket amp kit, it's like .5 watts. But I ended up getting one of those lil smokeys for free so my tiny high gain amp needs are pretty much met.

bassmen are pretty simple, for men of our ilk, i think. as far as amps go.Mike wrote:I think it's doable with some of the kits that give you everything including chassis and instructions. The preamp board is pretty simple, it's all the other stuff I'm more concerned about, like Heater element wiring, Filter Caps, tube wiring in general etc. All the transformers and that nonsense.aen wrote:bassmen are pretty simple, for men of our ilk, i think. as far as amps go.Mike wrote:I think it's doable with some of the kits that give you everything including chassis and instructions. i don't know what you guys are so worried about. you both have way more electronics skills and knowledge than me and i just finished my second amp build last night. it works fine.Mike wrote:The preamp board is pretty simple, it's all the other stuff I'm more concerned about, like Heater element wiring, Filter Caps, tube wiring in general etc. All the transformers and that nonsense.aen wrote:bassmen are pretty simple, for men of our ilk, i think. as far as amps go.Mike wrote:I think it's doable with some of the kits that give you everything including chassis and instructions. Would love to see pics and/or demo.

You have serious skills, HiWatt quality wiring there, Buddy. Where did you get this kit from and what are your experiences with the various kit makers?

i got the kit from www.vintagehiwattrestorations.com. it's a bit pricier than weber, but the parts quality is much better. weber is still a good deal and a good option for a first build. just be prepared to upgrade a few components (the fuse holder and pilot lamp are ridiculously crappy).NickS wrote:+1Mike wrote:You have serious skills, HiWatt quality wiring there, Buddy.
