Bronco Bass 'project'

Actually I will send WDMusic an email, they said 2 weeks and its been more than that now. GRRR.

The other to do, change the pickup, will probably be done at the same time. So at the minute, until the pickguard arrives, I'm stuck. I could order the pickup..and put it in early.

UPDATE:

Pickguard has arrived! Took a while but it's here. It looks awesome, b/w/b musicmaster guard. Came with holes in for a thumb rest which I didnt ask for, but I'm pretty pleased about. I'm gonna put it on tomorrow.

Anything I should do to protect the finish of the guitar when drilling holes in it? Don't want it to crack the finish.

Be steady and careful, don't monkey it, and put a thumb rest on, it'd put mojo through the roof.

New guard is on! I love it. The 'project' is not finished though. I need to fill in the old holes, install a new pickup and sort out a few niggles with the new guard. But the main change from Bronco to Musicmaster is complete!

Niggles I need to sort:

As you will maybe notice, 2 of the holes in the guard have no screws (not the thumb rest holes). The hole up near the neck was my lazyness, knowing i will have to remove it soon anyway to install a pickup etc, not a problem there. However the hole missing a screw near the bottom is because the hole is actually over where the body is routed, so there is nothing to screw the hole into! I think I'm just gonna stick one it and secure it with tape or something, to make it look like its in properly lol. The guard is lifting a little bit on that side though...

Also, the heads of the pickup screws are bigger, but the holes weren't. So they don't go flat against the guard. I will sort that out when i change the pickup.

Overall though the guard is good. I would say it fits great but really there is nothing for it to fit round.. it doesn't go round the neck pocket or round the bridge and it requires new holes anyway. But first step is complete.

you did a really bad ass job, the knobs look swell. i am warming up to maple neck'd basses.

Nice work Dan

I'd leave the white pickup cover, stick a 1/4 for jag under there. Also a white racing stripe would be look sexy aswell.

Thanks. It's pretty amazing how a quick change on knobs and pickguard can transform the look of a guitar.
The maple neck's nice, I just wish it was slightly darker maple. The ghostly white maple is a bit cheap looking.

Thanks. I agree, the white robroe looks good. I planned to get a black one but I think you're right - I should stick with the white one. Comp stripes could work.. I will mess around on photoshop and see what it's like!

I have been looking at pickups. I want to keep the robroe on so I'm ruling out a rails design (you cant put a robroe over them right?). The main contender is a Seymour Duncan Basslines Quarter Pound for single coild P-BASS.

Can that fit in the strat size robroe? I have read some good reviews of it, including someone putting it in a Squier Bronco.

Black thumb guard or Rosewood?

Unless you cut out the pickup cover, MadMike did it and Fran mentioned it aswell. all you'd need is a craft knife i think.

Cut it out so the rails go through? I dont want the rails to be showing.

Basically they do Bass thumb rests in a variety of colours. I'm thinking I could add a bit of colour to the bass with a BLUE PEARL THUMB REST lulz. Here's what they got:

Zebra & Cheetah Patterns:

I think the maple one would look cool, matching the maple neck. But I also digg the Zebra pattern.

Yeah I initially just thought black or white pearl. But then I found these.. and thought maybe it would make it stand out a bit. Zebra one is cool, and matches the 'colour scheme' of the bass.

yeah, I've been wondering something... have you ever noticed on old p-basses the thumbrest is wood?

most of the new ones are plastic though right? where can you get one like that? I suppose you could just widdle your own out of a piece of scrap pine.

I have seen loads of wooden ones for sale. The ones i posted above are wood (besides the pearl and patterned ones). Also a few other guitar parts sites had wooden ones. They are more expensive though than the plastic ones.

yea, I know there are wood ones but what I'm saying is those old ones are the same black thumbrest they use now, except they weren't plastic. they were wood painted black.

ah I see. you could just make your own and paint it black maybe. Or buy a wooden one and paint it.
