Taylor plug-and-play loaded guards

Not for me, but an interesting NOTION. I guess that's what you do when you can't think of a good body design. This unrelated pic is one of their featured event photos of a Taylor Swift appearance, whomever the fuck that is. Another odd choice from Taylor. No wonder acoustic makers rarely make the crossover.

Tbh, I don't see why companies haven't made this standard already? Like why couldn't Fender put a standard connection into all of their new guitars and then they could sell different p/up options for all of their guitars. Like hum sized p90s to fit into guitars that traditionally have hambackers and singlecoil sized buckers for fitting into singlecoil guitars. And a bunch of other options I can't think of. I'm pretty sure Dan Armstrong guitars have done this for years.

Love the idea, although it's essentially just the connector inside that makes it different to any other guitar. I would've thought that given the "swap-n-play" angle they're really plugging, they could've gone for a slide-out scratchplate (maybe a lowered route on the bottom/right of the guitar), so you don't have to loosen or remove the strings.


Really seems like they were just making up the numbers at points.. "So, we've got a double bucker scratchplate. How about the same thing, but with less?"

A lot of companies have tried this and failed: Taylor is even ripping off the basic look from a short-lived early 2000s company that made guitars and electronics modules for them (the whole center bit with pickups, controls and a jack on it, just slide it into the guitar from the rear and there's a metal contact point to ground the strings... no leads to plug, strings can be tuned to pitch the whole time, takes less than 10 seconds, etc...) If that didn't work, I don't see why this should.

The major problem with all of these things is that you can make the base guitar Fender-style or Gibson-style... which is going to make it sound like one of those guitars, pretty much all the time. That Taylor is going to sound like a Strat with 3 singles in it, but when it has 2 buckers in it it's going to sound like... an HH strat.

These Taylors seem to be the kind of guitar that is aimed at some baby-boomer-aged guy that's chasing a tone he'll never find. Hopefully those screws don't go directly into the wood, for I fear it's only a matter of time before ol' Shaky Hands changes from S/S/S to H/H for the tenth time in a week and completely fucks the wood.

edit: I realised avj just said this. I really gotta read threads through before poasting any old shit.

WTF this is stupid. Change pickups on a semi-regular basis and you'll strip-out the pickguard screws in no time at all. Especially using an electric screwdriver. Then we're back to matchstick dowels and gunky woodglue.

i chopped off the old one and then coupled all the old and new wires together with ghetto black tape.

The old Shergold Modulator had a quick change control panel to let you switch over the electronics (not the P/us though).
That was a huge success neither.
