Been quite a while since I bought many guitars. Mainly because I'm waiting on a couple of projects to come back from a couple of luthiers (thinline tele, musima elgita). So I finally snapped and had to have a 25 1/2" scale guitar. Been covetting the RGX-A2 for aaaages, so I bought one.

But then that got lost/delayed in the post (finally sorted, fingers crossed and arriving Friday). So I bought the Mike Stern (who?) twin humbucker custardcaster:

I must say, the custardcaster plays great, looks more custardly than all my other guitars, and has some flat-radius thin shredding neck which is cool but completely alien to me.

It seems one bonus of buying beginner-grade (although these are alot better than that really) guitars is that you can find cool bundles. The RGX is coming with a Danophobe FAB distortion, whereas the other one came with an amp (Frontman 25R), hard case, strap, two leads, Danophobic French Toaster pedal... all for £180!

I remember those Mike Stern guitars, think they came out around 2001. I think there were two, 1 retailed around £200 the other around £500, they recieved very good reviews at the time. The not quite tele shape reminds me of the Fender Bullet guitars with the mustang pups from the 80's, saw Phoenix using them at primavera.

I have heard alot of good reviews about the Mike Stern guitars. I had a couple of Yamahas over the years, I sold an older SE model and regretted it ever since. lexx

Nice one Tim, Yamaha dont get the credit they deserve around these parts and i dont mean this to sound off but you are one of the last people i thought would buy new Yamaha stuff.
I've played both them models and they are ace, the RGX is definitely an eye catcher, it reminded me of ikea sci-fi but in a cool way. The Mike Stern Teles are just awesome, i nearly bought one about 11 years ago and have since dabbled with the idea every other year.

the yamaha shit is really nice. i played an rbx at mf some time ago, and was very impressed. just not a fan of active anything.

what's the deal with the backlit knobs? just for cool's sake? hmmm...kinda cool idea...but the brushed steel look on the tuning pegs is kinda weird/slightly cool...

over all...i'd have to hear what it sounds like.

I think its a built in tuner or something. I don't like them though, they look like something bellamy would wank over.

The sad thing is that, probably because I'm such an Apple fanboy, I really the iGuitar look, I just hate the superstrat shape.

I think the term Superstrat is outdated and overused Gavin. They are just guitars based on a Strat shape with different hardwear and set up, its hardly an Ibanez Jem is it?
Would anyone call a Squier 51 a Superstrat? I doubt it yet it is Strat shape and it has a humbucker.

i think superstrat defines it quite accurately.

it's shaped like a strat, it's got hard edges, no pickguard, and sort of exaggerated horns.

a squier 51 has a tele control plate, a single in the neck, a tele neck and a huge pickguard. of course it's not a superstrat.
this has two humbuckers and no pickguard. a fretboard with no markers on the front reminds me of superstrats too.

does a guitar need a silly handle and a floyd rose to be a superstrat?

wow, i didn't know they made a black one and a bass like. liek the black.

the lights are just for show and you can take out the battery if you don't want them to light up. i think they change color when you switch pups or whatever. can't remembar.
