This is just a cover of Roger & Zapp. He' s not kicking the twisted sick original tales about kids, ice cream vans, and lost innocence.

Yes fool that's Roger Troutman. His biggest hit was "More Bounce to the Ounce" which has been in a gazillion rap samples. He was a great musician and he played guitar very well and I've even seen him with a Jazzmaster. He's passed on, he was tragically killed by his own brother.
He said he got the combo of Talkbox and Vocoder from Stevie Wonder, but the vocoder or talkbox effect is old as shit going back way before Stevie.

Here is some old ass clip of this thing called the Sonovox which was like a Talkbox but instead of a tube it had some speaker system attached to the throat.

Daft Punk in the 40ies.. Strange combination.. / The song the lady sang was nice, but it got creepy once the fellow jumped in. // Didnt know that talkboxes are that old.. first lesson of the day.

They really do and West Coast Rap in general. It's music that goes great with the Hydraulics they use in Lowriders and the poplocking. I read somewhere that "More Bounce to the Ounce" was the most sampled song in the history of Chicano and West Coast Rap.

That video from the 40's is ace! So's that Stevie one actually. Nice history lesson

The Vocoder and Talkbox and other things like auto-tune are terribly overused these days. It wouldn't be a problem if they were used in an innovative and unique way, but it seems they creep into songs to paste over bad singing or to make it 'futuristic and computery', or they're just used for flat out cliche hooks. It's really tiresome and irks me when I hear it on the radio in a Kanye West song or something. It's nice to hear them when they were interesting and unique.

Jay Z has a song called Death of Auto Tune or D.O.A. where he claims he will kill this trend in Hip Hop music single handedly.

I liked some of it but most of it is horrible. I think Kanye used it to great effect on 808s and Heartbreak because of the emotional content of that album and what he was going through, it worked with the music.

I grew up as a hispanic kid growing up in LA, so naturally I've got nothing but love for Zapp and Roger. Computer Love was the first thing I did when I first found out to modulate my voice on Logic.

The sonovox vid is awesome. That was the tool used to give Casey Jr. from Dumbo is voice
