Video cameras + XLR leads..

Post by benwalker »

Need to get some proper videos going for myself and some of the Mondesir stuff - trying to borrow a video camera, but as usual, they all have shit mics.

I've got some half-decent mics to use, but since they're XLR (camera is mini-jack) the two don't connect... I've looked into XLR->Camera convertors but they all seem very $$ - would it work getting a cheap (behringer 2-channel?) mixer or preamp, and sending the phono out from that to a camera? Anyone tried something like this? Argh?!!

I'm not sure about getting XLR mics plugged in to the camera. But you could record audio and video separately. Then put the recorded audio track over the video. Something like that would be pretty simple.

You can use an XLR to jack cable and then add a mini jack adaptor. Or you could use one of those and buy a mini jack plug, cut the standard jack off and solder the mini jack on. You could also do that with an XLR cable you have.

The main thing is never to buy one specifically marketed as a camera mic cable. It won't be even a tiny bit better and you will have to bend over to pay for it.

thing i was concerned about was phantom powering mics - if it were just cables it would probably be fine, but anyhoo....

Should be able to get away with a little behringer thing and then go mic(s) -> something that has two inputs with 48v and output -> cable that goes to mini-jack.

funny how adding "camera" to cable makes it significantly more expensive...

It's a bit like buying an SD card in a camera shop. You'll pay through the nose.

If you need phantom power you'll need an XLR > XLR cable between the mic and your phantom power source so an external unit will be necessary, or battery powered mics (like the AKG C3000).

at some point in your life you will start to accumulate cables, leads, connectors, patches, wires, and other sorts of ill shit. then when you have too much to leave laying around on the floor you will buy a fishing tackle box and stuff it all in there. when the top won't close you need to buy another box to put all your shit in.

i recommend starting as soon as you can. its fun for the whole family
