I made it. It's a printed out picture of Kali glued and cut to the original pickguard then clearcoated over. took alot of layers and sanding to get it to look right.landon wrote:wow i really like the pickguard material

So, I'm going with this.
1. He found the picture on the internet.
2. He printed it on some kind of paper or photo paper.
3. Glued the picture on top of the pick guard.
4. Cut the pic to closely match the pick guard shape.
5. Sanded down the edges to match.
6. And then sprayed a laquer of some kind over the top of it and let it dry.
Just a guess.

Sure thing. I used standard automotive glossy clear coat. you can buy it at any autoparts store.landon wrote:can you explain how you got the pic on there ?landon wrote:wow i really like the pickguard material

what kind of clear coat?
1. Find a picture you want to use.
2. Cut it into s circle a bit bigger than your pickguard alla round. Get an idea of how you want orient it now.
3. Sand the top of your pickguard just a bit to give it some grip, maybe with 2000 grit.
4. Spray a light coat of clearcoat on the top of the pickguard.
5. Spray a VERY light mist of clear coat onto the back of the print out.
6. Place the print out ontop of the pickguard, you only have a few minutes to place it so try and get it right the first time.
7. Very carefully try and smooth out any air bubbles, don't be too picky because once the clear coat start satruarting through the ink on teh paper will run if you mess with it.
8. Spray a good coat of clearcoat over top of the print out now mounted on the pickguard. Let dry a few hours. lightly sand (2000 grit when dry)
9. Spray a light coat of clear coat over the reverse of the print out and pickguard after dry. Let this dry for a few hours. (This will stiffen the paper a bit and make it easier to cut the overage of the pickguard.)
10. Once all dry use an exacto knife to trim the overage off the print out. Do this from the reverse so you can cut exactly along the edge of where the paper serpates from the pickguard.
11. Spray another solid coat of clear coat ontop of the now trimmed printout mounted to pickguard. Let dry a few hours. lightly sand (2000 grit) when dry.
12. Once dry carefully sand the edges of the pickguard, try and blend the edge of the paper to the edge of the pickguard. Go lightly or you'll undo all of your clear coating. You want to make sure there is no where that the paper is seperated from the plastic from the plastic or it'll eventually fray and pull the paper up.
13. Layer coats of clear coat untill you get to your desired thickness, lightly sand between coats. It only too me two before I was happy with it, but your milaeage may vary.
Thats all she wrote. Easy as pie. I did the headstock the exact same way.

repaint complete. A few imperfections here and there but at this point I'm willing to call them "relic'd".
Tomorrow I will very carefully clear coat the bastard and then start working on the electronics. I got ballsy and added slide markers on the side as there were none, and I must say they came out better than I had hoped.
Used a small hand drill to drill in just slightly. Dropped a glob of acrylic copper paint in. Wiped off excess and walla... perfect dot.

I'm calling the "finish" done for now. The neck came out super sweet and the body came out utter trash. There was a rain storm earlier today and I as it got cooler all the moisture in the air fucked up the clear coat as it was drying on the body. It got all weird and textury in some places and is in general not very shiny, and I accidentally puta thumb print in the front cause I'm a doofus. but I sanded it so it looks decent enough. It's got clear coat so it's protected and teh important part, the neck, is perfect. I'll probably go over it at some point in the future with a little sanding and clearcoat respray but it's good enough to play and not look like total trash so play it I will.
I start the electronics tomorrow, but here is the "finished" body.
I'm just ready for this to be over with and the touching up it needs can easily be done frther down the road if it ever NEEDS too look really good outside of internet pictures.

honestly that's a better skill to have in my estimation...a shitty neck on a great body is not a guitar, know what i mean?endsjustifymeans wrote:yeah... apparently I'm good with necks but shit with bodies.St. Jimmy wrote:very nicely done dude! i had similar issues with the Cindisquire as well...decided that maybe refinishing guitars is not my forte. but i love the pickguard and headstock! great idea!

Very, very true.
If you think of god as a pair of pants, a spiritualist thinks he needs pants, in fact he wants pants but none of the conventional types of pants seem to fit just right, so he makes his own pants and is happy that his knees are no longer cold.-fibus
