Experiences of Lollar and Vintage Vibe pickups for Jaguar?

Post by hwestman »

I am shopping for replacement pickups for an old MIJ Jaguar and both the Lollars (with alnico 2 bridge pickup) and the Vintage Vibes sound interesting (allegedly well shielded...).

There seems to be very little first hand experience posted on the net though. Has anyone here tried both or either out? I am referring to the traditional type, NOT P-90ish versions?

Looking forward to sharing some of the collective wisdom :) !

Thanks :) ...

I am very new to the Jag/shortscale world. I have entered it via the more mainstream JM and it'll be interesting to see how long it takes before I am moving on to mustangs, musicmasters etc... :P

Sorry I don't have first hand experience with the Jag pickups from either manufacturer but I have used other pickups from both of them.

I have heard lots of pickups from Lollar and I can say that his p90s and firebird pickups are some of the best pickups I've ever heard. I have yet to hear of anyone not being extremely happy with lollars, especially when upgrading from stock pickups.

My experience with Vintage Vibe was in the form of a custom pickup order (a mini humucker with 12 alnico pole pieces instead of a bar mag) and I must say that Pete is an amazing dude to work with and a great winder! He was available over the phone, made the pickup super quick, and provided great support. I have not heard any of his single coils first hand but I understand he comes from the Lollar school of winding so the pickups will probably be great and perhaps cheaper.
He also talks more about shielding so you may have a little less noise.

Both manufacturers do reverse wound reverse polarity sets so you'll have no hum with both pickups engaged.
Hope you get some good ones!

Thanks for the input... I guess I can't go wrong really... I am very tempted by the Lollars but it sure is a lot of dough...

There is a dude named "danocaster" on the offsetguitars.com forum selling an unused set of the Lollar Jag pickups.
