The Colonel (another tele project thread fuuuu)

Post by paul_ »

Tried to make the best one possible this time, came in under budget so very pleased.
Had it done for ages but still working on various things.

MIM standard arctic white body, Allparts poly 60s neck, bone nut (made it from radiused blank), tuners from my CIJ Jag (put white tipped ones on it ages ago), Allparts nickel bridge, Fender AV '62 Custom Tele bridge pickup

Have a Squier standard pickup in the neck right now but going to replace it as I need more clarity from it for the vintage style wiring scheme (bridge - neck w/tone full on - neck w/.1uf treble bleed). Interested in a Twisted Tele from the baja but haven't seen any come up yet. Because the MIM body is routed for a neck humbucker I may just stick a strat pickup in a new pickguard for awhile until I can find a better tele neck unit.
Bridge pickup is just tops, very pleased. Also can get both pickup setting by nudging switch in-between two settings as I do on my Strat.

Wanted to make it white blonde ash (hence the single ply pickguard which is GFS btw) but too many ebay deals on bodies fell through. I like the way it looks a lot though.

Because this has set-screw barrel knobs on it I've finally learned why those "top-hat" tele switches are so damn tall. So now I gotta buy a white one of those next, so I can get off the bridge pickup on-the-fly. Shit.
Also routed out a bit of the pickguard to adjust the truss but didn't account for the wood underneath not being routed out either. Would do it. But I'd also like to watch TV and eat chips.

It sounds and plays great.

VWH Teles always look slick. Nice setup on an affordable screamer, Paul.

And speaking of white/Colonel, I'm glad you didn't throw in some splashes of red and/or chicken grease.

They don't look like that anymore, that's an older pic. Still doesn't solve the problem a tophat would though unfortunately.

Rob, I don't have a black tophat lying around. Black tip + paint = more than white tip. Kudos on a good job though, I was reading your thread when I decided to get any kind of white tip in the first place.

I did this on my strat...wouldn't advise it as the size hole you'd need to make to realistically get in there to properly turn the truss would be bigger than pickguard space (between pickup and neck) allows - unless there is some super duper tool that does this well at right angles and with less than a centimetres clearence. Seemed like a good idea at the time but one I wouldn't have done with foresight.

Looks hot mate - Liek.

exactly why painting plastic is a bad idea. also, I'm sure the white switch tip costs less than a can of paint.
cogito ergo sum...thing or other...
