Restoring a CIJ Stang into aged LPB Comp Stang COMPLETE!

Post by prospect »

Project is en route!

After getting on the way I realized I would of been better of stripping the poly but I'm already well into the primer, and first layer of sonic blue (for the comp stripes) so it's too late to go back (I can't afford to buy the stuff again).

Either way this is my second Mustang using the original Poly as a base, and my third refin project. So far so good. Enjoy the photos!

1st - Removal of stickers

This poor thing was dinged up with deep puncture marks and some DEEP knicks (see top of comp

stripe, and bottom cutaway)

Patched up the holes with filler and sanding sealer.

Primer and then the initial sonic blue color coat for the competition stripes

Aging the pickguard.
Initially it was perfect except for the edges.
The masking tape and unmasked areas were thrown off balance so I had to sand and re-do it. Photographed on top of a white sheet of paper for white reference.

Lastly I bought this small pine clipboard at a craft store for $.50.

I'm using it to test the variances of the Tinted Clear (two coats near the bottom, one closer to the top) and also to test different types of masking tape. Ignore the sloppy masking! The final result will use really good masking tape (with nice sharp edges) and it will be precisely measured!

Careful measuring and masking for competition stripes

Sonic blue base coat and masked stripes.

LPB ! The little metal glitter flakes look so cool in the light

More to come. Stay tuned 8)
So far I can see that I'm going to be heavy on the tinted clear. I want the Lake Placid Blue to turn as green as possible. ReRanch LPB is very bright.

Thanks!

Oh and that was my first post here.
I'm a regular at OSG but since my favorite guitars are shortscales (Jags and Stangs) I wanted to start hanging out here too.

This was my collection before the recession.

Image

Note that I had two of everything :D

But it went from 12 (above) to 4.
Well... 5 including the Comp Mustang being resurrected above
I kept the black XII, 64 LPB Jag, 1 Univox, and a black beat up Jazzmaster project

My favorite being the 1964 LPB Jag

Image

I purchased it from the daughter of the original owner about 8 years ago. It currently has a Mastery Bridge installed (the original bridge, mute and cover are in the ohsc) 8)
