This is the Wang Stang neck. Pat warned me it was painted with like a Fender scotch paint, so I knew it may be effed up. I just couldn't leave it alone. I figured it was broken and fixed. I didn't care, but I wanted to see and to let the wood look how it looked. I had to sand like a mother to get most of this off. I have sanded necks before and this was heavy duty.

What does this look like to you? Gangrene? It looks like something Narco Martenot would make out of jurassic crap. (I couldn't think of his name--I kept coming up with Albecore Tunamelt).

I also Dremeled the stock Vox pup rings to fit these new squared ones (that came with the Vox carcass). All the pieces were there, but I did have to jigger them to get them to work. It's coming along nicely, but I have WAY TOO MANY projects right now. You don't even want to know the six string crosses I bear. I am going to do the tinted clears treatment on the centers to get them to match the old parts. I had to do something similar on the neck because it looked so much cleaner than the Vox body binding.

do you think it was original from the factory like that?

I would just paint it matching headstock and leave the back of the neck with just a clear coat.

I suppose it could be a wildwood neck, but I think it's more likely that someone fucked it up.

Use wood bleach on the neck. I had a neck that had water damage like that and the wood bleach worked nicely. Almost all of it disappeared. I'll email you some before and after pics.

No, not at all. It did take about a week though. I mixed up a little batch each evening for about a week and would apply it with a q-tip. I would apply it lightly, leave it to dry, then apply lightly again. Usually 5 or 6 times an evening. Took about 30 seconds to apply then just leave it to dry and repeat. It didn't completely remove everything but I was very happy with it. DGNR8's neck doesn't look to be stained as deeply as mine was so his should turn out great. Mine was almost black in some places.

Put a dark-ish brown stain on it and it will be beautiful.

Good points. That bleach looks like it worked way better than tan paint.

It's likely that in SoCal in the early 70s, the factory employees may have been having some pretty crazy evenings, hence sloppy work on Monday. I don't know if I can tell if it's inside the wood or not, but there's a blue tint to it that reminds me of wildwood. Is it possible that they had a few spare boards lying around?

Well it is what it is. While I am tempted to bleach it, I think I am going to try tinted clear and go with it.

What brand of bleach? I have one that has some shitty looking mold spots I need to kill. This and the Mustang are the last of the refins for the season. It's a post-war Epi.
