They were bad-ass wherever they were made. I played a sonic blue one when they first came out, I was in high school and had a guitar mag with a review of the bass and guitar. I never made the connection that they were Vista Squiers back then and had a low opinion of all other Squiers but I remember these as being the shit anyway. They were the first bass I played I felt comfortable with too, probably because they were shortscale.

my goal has always been to get a MM bass and switch the rosewood neck for a maple one (apologies in advance for those who haet maple) and put in an SD quarter pounder bass pickup (for 51 p bass). Now I've got a Bronco bass neck just waiting to be used, and the pickup could be just an order away.
I'm calling tomorrow first thing.

Just missed a white one on ebay that went for 233 €. To keep the relations, that would mean about 210 $ that you would have paid in USA. At current course it would of course be some 334 $$. € is strong, but that doesn't affcet used prices, of course.
But I just recently decided I could use a bass additional to my guitars, and I just didn't go for the first possibility that passed my way ...
The second one is also quite attempting, it's a mid / end 70ties "Arirang" (small korean factory) with one pickup not working and one tuner out of order for a sloppy 100 € shipped ... looks like a Burns shortscale copy with Mini Humbuckers, might be fun to pimp.

Obi Wan says: The Jundland Wastes are not to be traveled lightly.
strat-talk says: Shortscale is a crazy place. There seems to be no rules at all and they're all insane!
