jag pups!
hey, long time lurker, first time poster and all that.
last year i bought a CIJ jag, all was good. then i played it properly in the studio etc and the microphonic feedback was horrible.
i'm going to be replacing the bridge pickup soon, and the neck at a slightly later date too (any good recommendations are very welcome). the thing is, i can't decide on a pickup, which is where i'm hoping you will help me out. i'd love to keep the jaguar singlecoilness for the clean sounds, but have as humbucky a pickup sound with the dirt is kicked in, as i always play with high gain/distortion. i can't decide over staying single coil with a quarter-pound, or going humbucking with a JB JR etc. any recommendations?

the gainier you get the better the 1/4 pounders sound. For rock tonez, they're awesome.
clean they're kinda, meh. almost a bit inarticulate.

I have a Duncan SJAG-2 (bridge). It's better than the stock CIJ in that it's definitely hotter but it's not versatile at all. I found it to sound downright shitty at all but very high gain levels where I must admit, it does sound pretty darn good but unless that is ALL you want from this pickup, I recommend you steer clear of this one.
The Antiquity II I have in the neck position, on my CIJ is a fucking DREAM, though. Sounds the way a Jaguar should sound, in my opinion. Very cristally, almost bell-like cleans. Once you give it a bit more juice, it breaks up all amps I have played it trough (early 60's Harmony H306, '65 Bandmaster, '77 Traynor YBA-1, 80's JCM800, Peavey Classic 50) gorgeously. Other than vintage 60's Fenders, this is the best Jaguar pickup I have heard.

Definitely 1/4 pounder. If you go for anything hotter you can say goodbye to the traditional Jag sound.
Antiquities work well too but they are pricey, the aged magnets create a smoother sound which works better with Overdrive than the other models. Less 'spikey'.
Never tried Novak or Lollar so could not comment on them.

Yes they sound good. Yes it will ruin any jag tones.kevlar wrote:ah, mixed reply's start to come in. would getting a JB JR totally ruin any jag tones coming through? do they sound good? my money is still on the 1/4 pounder at the moment. will be buying one some time next week

I didn't like the quarter pounder when I put it in mine.
Soon after that I went whole hog and put in a full sized humbucker...now I've got P90s in there and they work for me.
Obviously that involves routing.
If I had to do it over I wouldn't, but get some antiquities or bareknuckle to wind me some to my spec.

robroe swears by the 1/4 pounders.
St. Jimmy has one in the neck of the Franken-sonic (used to be mine), I really liked it and I think he does too. Maybe he can get you a sound demo.
